UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA

The University wishes to invite applications for the following position, which will become vacant on 1 March 2018:

 

FACULTY OF THEOLOGY AND RELIGION: PROFESSOR AND DEAN (Ref: 22806)

 

The University seeks to appoint a Dean capable of visionary leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to efficaciously execute the strategic plans of the University and Faculty. The Dean must possess the requisite qualifications and experience to be appointed as a full professor in the Faculty of Theology and Religion. The Dean is assisted by appropriate management and support structures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the alignment of the ethos, vision and mission of the Faculty with that of the University.
  • The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the Faculty meets its strategic goals.
  • He/she must be able to provide strong academic leadership and possess the capacity to promote research and teaching and learning excellence.
  • He/she should also show proof of the capacity to create an environment conducive to research and teaching and learning excellence in the Faculty.
  • The Dean is expected to market the Faculty, undertake fundraising and promote regional, national and international partnerships with other academic institutions, potential employers of our students, research organisations, financial, commercial and business enterprises, government and the community.
  • The incumbent will form part of the senior management team of the University and provide oversight in respect of the management of the operational activities of the Faculty of Theology and Religion.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • An appropriate doctorate specialising in the broad field of theology.
  • Three years’ experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional bodies.
  • Three years’ experience in the supervision of postgraduate students (master’s and PhD students).
  • Established national and international profile and networks.
  • At least five years’ proven leadership experience.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

 

  • Recognised academic status in the broad field of theology.
  • A proven research and publication and teaching track record and the ability to create an environment in which research and teaching and learning activities are supported and can flourish.
  • The ability to manage the Faculty and to provide sound academic leadership.
  • The ability to provide strong leadership and the capacity to lead the Faculty on the journey that it has already embarked upon with regard to curriculum transformation, furthering an inter-cultural and inter-religious environment in the Faculty and promoting racial and gender equality.
  • Excellent communication and appropriate language skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

 

  • Three years’ managerial experience at a tertiary institution.

 

The Dean is appointed for a term of four years, but external candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department within the University.
