PROFESSOR (WITH SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES) IN THE PAPACY AND PAPAL COMMUNICATION C.1050-1300

 

The Department of Culture and Global Studies invites applicants for a temporary position as Professor of Medieval History with a specific responsibility of undertaking and managing research on the medieval papacy and papal communication c. 1050-1300. The professorship is a five-year position with a start date of 1 April 2018 (or as soon as possible after this date).

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Research 



The successful applicant will have a proven track record of undertaking research on the medieval papacy, its role and position in European and Latin Christian society and/or its role in the expansion of Christendom, c. 1050-1300; applicants working on papal communication within this period will be especially welcome. The successful applicant will have experience with attracting external funding and publishing at international level in this field.

 

Administration and Research Management



The successful applicant will have experience with research management of a project entailing a supervisory capacity for multiple academics at different levels (e.g. PhD students, post docs). Furthermore, the successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to obtain external funding for his/her own research as a principal investigator as well as an ability to support the search for external funding for others. Applicants with knowledge and experience of the European and/or Danish funding environment will be especially welcome.


Teaching and Supervision 



The applicant must be a committed teacher with a proven track record of teaching and supervising at BA, MA and PhD levels. The teaching obligations will primarily be within the BA and MA programmes in History at the Department of Culture and Global Studies at the Aalborg campus, but the position may also include teaching and supervision obligations in other programmes under the School of Culture and Global Studies. It will be considered an advantage if applicants have experience with problem-based learning which is Aalborg University’s pedagogical model. Applicants who are qualified to teach within other areas of the programmes mentioned should state this in their application. 

 

Teaching and supervision activities at the study programme in History are conducted in Danish, and applicants must be able to supervise and assess written and oral presentations in Danish.

 

The Professor will be required to participate as a full member of the research group Cultural Encounters in Pre-Modern Societies, where he/she will engage in the continuous development of the field of research together with the other group members.

 

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers and students in an environment characterised by cultural diversity.

 

Regular attendance at the Department is required. In addition, the new employee must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department, school and research group. Qualification requirements
 



It is presupposed that applicants can document a high degree of original scientific production at an international level, and can document having contributed considerably to the development of the subject area of the job description. Furthermore, applicants must account for their potential to further develop the subject area. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant's ability to perform research management and other management functions, provide pedagogical guidance as well as supervision and take part in academic assessments. Special emphasis will be placed on the potential of the applicant to undertake the specific projects related to this position, cf. job description.

Assessment 



An expert assessment committee will assess all candidates.



Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

AGREEMENT

 

Appointment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Science's Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Salary is in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State.
