The School of Music and Creative Media Production is recruiting a full-time Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Visualisation and Visual Effects for creative media. The successful candidate will have a tertiary qualification (preferably postgraduate) and show leadership and innovation in teaching and research in visualisation, concepting, and visual effects for multiple media destinations, including film, television, animation and game development.

Position overview

 

The School of Music and Creative Media Production is recruiting a full-time Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Visualisation and Visual Effects for creative media. The successful candidate will have a tertiary qualification (preferably postgraduate) and show leadership and innovation in teaching and research in a related area of expertise. The successful candidate will also have professional skills in visualisation, concepting, and visual effects for multiple media destinations, including film, television, animation and game development. They will assist in the design and lead the delivery of courses that involve concept design, storyboarding, 2d compositing, dynamics and other visual effects.

 

The School of Music and Creative Media Production was recently established to respond to New Zealand’s growth and internationally recognised reputation for innovation and creativity in both music and media production. It is staffed by internationally acclaimed and award-winning practitioners and is in the completion stages of building one of the largest studio complexes in the region.

 

Together with the School of Design and the School of Art, the School of Music and Creative Media Production is part of the College of Creative Arts at Massey University, Wellington. The School of Design offers majors in Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Spatial Design, Visual Communication Design and Textiles. The School of Art offers majors in Fine Art and Photography.

 

The School of Music and Creative Media Production delivers two undergraduate degree programmes, the Bachelor of Commercial Music and Bachelor of Creative Media Production. The Bachelor of Commercial Music offers majors in Music Practice, Music Technology and Music Industry. The Bachelor of Creative Media Production offers students pathways in Film & TV, Animation & VFX, Web & Interactive and Games.

Job description

Purpose statement

To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey's students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding; providing administrative and professional service to the University and broader academic or professional communities.

Key accountabilities

Teaching and Learning


1. Undertake undergraduate teaching via all modes of teaching and delivery mediums, including through electronic and on-line technologies. 
2. Design and develop the academic and administrative content of courses and design the appropriate assessment criteria and processes. 
3. Coordinate and administer the teaching delivery and assessment of all papers allocated by the Programme Leader or Head of School.
4. Ensure that all teaching is research-informed and relevant, and that course materials are regularly updated. 
5. Supervise the teaching and marking of tutors/senior tutors, graduate assistants and technical support personnel. 
6. Participate in the peer review of teaching to enhance the quality of course design and delivery. 
7. Arrange for regular student evaluations of teaching for all papers/courses for which paper-coordination responsibilities have been assigned.
8. Be accessible to students by providing consultation time on course-related matters.
9. Assist in the personal development plan (PDP) process for the programme’s students.
10. Undertake teaching on each of Massey University’s campuses as required and through distance education.

 

Research and Scholarship


1. Undertake an active and appropriate programme of academic research, including participation in team-based research as appropriate, to the level expected by the University’s Strategic Research Capability Policy.
2. Publish this research through exhibition, performance, books, papers and/or other scholarly works in academic contexts.
3. Review research papers and other scholarly publications.
4. Participate in and present research at academic conferences.
5. Contribute to School/Institute/University seminars and workshops.
6. Seek research funding where there is an opportunity to do so.
7. Submit recent publications data to Research Management Services for entry onto the Research Information Management System (RIMS) and Symplectic as required.
8. Periodically enter updated ‘Peer Esteem’ and ‘Contributions to the Research Environment’ information onto RIMS and Symplectic as required.

 

Service to the Community


1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s charter and strategic goals.
2. Assist the School/College to develop and strengthen relationships with professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate.
3. Contribute to the broader community and society through the University’s obligations under the Education Act to fulfill “the role as critic and conscience of society”. 
4. Assist the School/College/University to develop an environment which gives effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Person specification

Qualifications

Relevant post-graduate degree and/or significant industry experience.

 

Experience

  1. Has demonstrated evidence of high level of achievement in visualisation and visual effects and/or significant industry experience.
  2. Experience teaching in the tertiary environment.
  3. Knowledge of critical perspectives on visualisation and visual effects, including identity and/or hyperreality studies.
  4. Show evidence of practical knowledge and understanding of 2d character design and production, including digital painting in Photoshop and alternatives.
  5. Knowledge of storyboarding and visual storytelling practices.
  6. Show evidence of practical knowledge and understanding of 2d compositing and visual effects production, including compositing in Nuke and alternatives.
  7. Show evidence of practical knowledge and understanding of post-production processes, including editing/colour grading in DaVinci and alternatives.
  8. Knowledge of good visual presentation practice (basic layout and design, creation of PDFs, etc.).
  9. Knowledge of production practices and project management, including the use of online tools (Trello, etc.).
  10. Broad knowledge of critical frameworks surrounding technology and art.
  11. Demonstrated ability in effective course development, curriculum content, and the presentation and layout of course and study materials at an undergraduate level.
  12. Experience in supervising research projects and theses to completion is desirable.
  13. Demonstrates knowledge of distribution techniques, including compression schemes and codecs.
  14. Knowledge of current pedagogical models and teaching and learning methodologies.
  15. Knowledge of current trends relevant to the delivery of the paper is essential.
