3-year postdoctoral fellow in collaboration with the National Museum of Art

 

In cooperation between the New Carlsberg Foundation, the National Museum of Art and the Department of Arts and Culture, a 3-year postdoctoral scholarship will be announced for occupation on 1 April 2018 (or soon thereafter) in research in critical curation and participation. The primary workplace will be on SMK.

Since 2008, cultural policy and cultural institutions in Denmark have been busy incorporating users and encouraging active participation. Many museums develop user-oriented exhibition and learning programs as a means of creating a democratic platform that can bridge bridges between different social groups and give them a voice. Critics argue that if participatory strategies in art, curation and museum dissemination generally should make a difference, they should not only support the status quo but could also serve as a performing space for experiments, social criticism and change.  

 

Job description  

This three-year postdoc project will investigate how art museum exhibitions can engage the audience in performative and critical activities that can challenge status quo and create institutional and social change. The project will also develop an understanding of museum curation as a performance-critical activity that can promote bodily-affective experiences and critical forms of learning that activate and mobilize participants.  

 

In this way, the project will contribute with new and relevant research in museum curation and dissemination, which in theory and practice explores how art exhibition can challenge and even transform dominant ways of sensing, experiencing, knowing and organizing knowledge.

Qualifications  

Recruitment as a postdoc. requires research qualifications at least equivalent to what can be achieved through satisfactory completion of PhD education in the field.  

Candidates with experience from museum categorization and dissemination in combination with new relevant methodological and theoretical positions will be preferred.  

 

In addition, emphasis will be placed on the following qualifications:  

• Research qualifications in museum curating and museology and the degree of originality and scope of scientific production  

• Applicant's scientific effort, professional breadth and depth, rigor, thoroughness and accuracy in relation to the stated position  

• Documented educational qualifications  

• Participation in networks - national and international  

• Experience with empirical field work and qualitative research  

• Experience with interdisciplinary cooperation and research  

• Good social skills  

• Excellent English and Danish language skills, written as orally

• Publications. Applicants can choose at most 3 publications for assessment, of which at least 2 must be published within the last 5 years from the expiration of the application deadline. The release date must be clearly marked on the publication list. The selected publications are uploaded as attached documents and numbered from 1-3.  

 

If the publication has one or more authors or is the work a result of a collective effort, it must be clearly stated which part of the work the applicant is responsible for. The faculty may, in exceptional cases, request a statement from the co-authors on the extent and nature of their participation in the work.  

 

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English, German and French may be expected to be assessed.  

 

At the end of the term all material will be destroyed.  

 

Recruitment procedure  

At the end of the application deadline, the Dean will set up an expert assessment committee to assess the applicants in relation to the specific position. Applicants are informed of the composition of the committee, and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns the applicant himself before the post is filled.

Wage and employment conditions  

The employment is limited to three (3) years and takes place in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and its professional organization. In addition, a total pension contribution of 17.1% of salary and pensionable supplement is provided. There will be the possibility of negotiating additional supplements based on qualifications.
