Doctoral Student Position in Archaeology

Doctoral student position in Domestication in Action – Tracing Archaeological Markers of Human-Animal Interaction for a period of 36 months, preferably from August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2021.

Field and location: The position is located in Archaeology, in the research group Domestication in Action – Tracing Archaeological Markers of Human-Animal Interaction (Domestication). Archaeology is part of the History, Culture and Communication Studies Research Unit at the Faculty of Humanities and contributes to Understanding Humans in Change, one of the strategic research areas of the University of Oulu, in studying humans and cultures with the help of material sources they have left behind.

The research group focusses on archaeological identification and interpretation of animal domestication, reindeer domestication in particular. The research group focusses especially on archaeological identification of human-animal interactions, such as, but not exclusively, draught reindeer use and reindeer feeding. In addition, the project aims to understand the relationship between people and domesticated reindeer and thus deepen the understanding of human-reindeer relationships and cultural practices concerning reindeer in the process of domestication.

The candidate is expected to conduct research related to the themes of the research project. Potential research topics include, but are not restricted to, methodological issues in identification of animal domestication, human-reindeer relationships, cultural practices and understandings concerning reindeer, or understanding the interactions between people and domesticated animals. Ability to conduct scholarly research in English is required. The appointee to the position must hold a higher university degree.

The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level (levels 2-4) chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, an additional salary component (not more than 46.3% of the basic salary level) will be paid based on personal achievement and performance. A separate agreement will be made on the teaching duties connected with the position within the framework of an annual work plan of 1624 hours, with the maximum being 5 % of the annual working hours as per the existing collective agreement. The position is subject to a trial period of 4 months.

The application should include the following documents (in English or Finnish).

Applications, including attachments, should be submitted using the electronic system form by 28th February 2018.

  • list of publications
  • research plan for the doctoral dissertation (max 5 pages)
  • statement by the supervisor
  • and any other appendices deemed nescessary by the applicant

The assessment of an application is based on the quality of the research plan, scientific merits and other academic qualifications of the applicant, and the significance of the research plan in relation to the research themes of Domestication research project.
