Doctoral student in the area of History of Modern Philosophy (David Hume) and Cognitive Science of Religion


Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Philosophy, on topics related to the research project: “Naturalizing Religion: in Search of Hume’s Heritage for Contemporary Cognitive Science of Religion” (funded by the FWO).

  • You work in collaboration with the project director, Willem Lemmens, and the postdoc researcher, Esther Kroeker.

  • You are part of the project’s research group.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department for Ethics and the Faculty of Philosophy.


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master’s degree in philosophy or in fields related to the cognitive study of religion.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.


We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;

  • the start date of scholarship will be 1 October 2018 (or earlier);

  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.324,20 - € 2.469,08;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
