The Faculty of Arts & Philosophy is seeking to fill the following part-time (90 %) vacancyin the Department of Philosophy:


Tenured academic staff in the area of Bio-ethics.


Job description


The assignment has a structural nature and concerns the three core activities of tenured academic staff: teaching, research, and services.

  • You will be assigned following lecturing duties for the couse of Bioethics (Faculty of sciences and department of philosophy), Media-ethics (faculty of Social Sciences) and a coordinating role in the EduMaster.

  • You will expand scientific research in the area of Bioethics and meta-ethics and acquire and manage external funding (national and international).

  • You will take up academic services in the department of philosophy.


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in philosophy or a doctoral degree of equal value.

  • You have post-doctoral research (or equivalent international) experience.

  • You have experience with qualitative empirical research on the field of applied ethics or with the integration of qualitative empirical research in bioethical or fundamental ethical research.

  • Teaching experience at an academic level and experience in the supervision of BA/MA theses is an asset.

  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • You have a passive knowledge of Dutch at the time of your employment.

  • You can meet the statutory language requirements for both the knowledge of the teaching language and the administrative language, Dutch. The University of Antwerp provides the necessary support.


We offer

  • a position as a lecturer with a temporary appointment ("tenure track") for a fixed term of five years will lead to a permanent appointment if your performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously set and announced evaluation criteria;

  • a position as a senior lecturer or higher will lead in principle to a permanent appointment after three years if your performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously set and announced evaluation criteria;

  • the date of appointment will be 1 October 2018;

  • a fulltime gross monthly salary ranging for a lecturer from € 4.171,55 - € 6.149,03 and for a senior lecturer from € 4.776,98 - € 7.504,57;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
