3 PhD positions at the Department of Linguistic, Literary, and Aesthetic Studies


A maximum of three PhD fellowships are available at the Department of Linguistic, Literary, and Aesthetic Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen from 1 October 2018. The positions are open in the following disciplines: General Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Digital Culture, Greek, Latin, Art History, Norwegian Literature, Norwegian Didactics, Norwegian Language, Norwegian as a Second Language, Old Norse Philology and Theatre Studies.


Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant will hold a master's degree or the equivalent in one of the relevant subject areas. Applicants must have completed their master’s degree at the time of application. Please note that the University requires the equivalent of a Norwegian master’s degree (i.e. 3 years bachelor and 2 years master, 300 ECTS altogether). Applicants who do not have a Norwegian master’s degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). The Department can send documentation of foreign education to NOKUT to evaluate if this degree is equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree.


The applicant must describe a research project within one of the relevant disciplines or subject areas. The candidate’s main supervisor must be permanently employed at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies. The application should clearly state the name and position of the person who has agreed to function as the main supervisor for the research project.  


The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others. The positions require proficiency in both written and oral English.

In cases where candidates have been assessed to be equally qualified, the department may take into account that a fair distribution between the department’s disciplines, in terms of supervisor capacities and other resources, is ensured.


About the PhD positions

The fellowships are awarded for a period of four years, provided progress is satisfactory. The research and educational part of the fellowships is 75%, while the last 25% is dedicated to teaching and other obligations. An agreement concerning the actual work load will be made with the department at the time of employment.


The employment period may be reduced if the selected candidate previously has been employed in a recruitment position. Applicants who has previously held a PhD-position at UiB cannot apply.


The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.


About the research training:

The Fellowships` main goal is to lead to a PhD degree, which qualifies for independent research activities, and for other work that requires particular competence.


The successful PhD Candidate, will be enrolled at the PhD program at UiB which entails an educational program/research training. It is a condition that the candidate satisfies the enrolment requirements for the PhD program at the University of Bergen.
