Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

We are recruiting for an exceptional artist/ scholar to join us as a Professor (though we may offer the post at Senior Lecturer dependent on experience) within our Contemporary Art Practice Academic Group to undertake the role of Programme Director of the MFA in Art & Humanities and contribute to theoretical/ contextual/ art historical studies.

You will be responsible for building on current interdisciplinary successes, and will explore further interdisciplinary opportunities that link creative art practice with academic studies. Interdisciplinary contemporary art practices, which include writing as well as visualising and making, are a key strength in DJCAD: over the next few years the School will build on this strength in both teaching and research to expand existing provision and grow significant new initiatives. Your prime responsibility will be to take on the role of Programme Director of the MFA in Art & Humanities, and you will lead in aspects of national/international recruitment, visionary teaching, and strategic new developments. In addition, you will have duties aligned to the support of the undergraduate history, theory and contextualisation studies; contribute to PhD supervision; and join colleagues in contributing to a vibrant research community.

  • An individual with extensive knowledge of theory and practice in Contemporary Art Practices, and in writing 
  • Ability to engage in research and generate outputs of a standard required for submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework
  • Experience in applying for funding to support research activities
  • Deep commitment to interdisciplinary approaches combining creative art practice with other work, and the ability to link with other disciplines effectively
  • A good understanding of student learning needs and the ability to plan challenging and innovative learning activities at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area or an undergraduate degree along with extensive academic experience. (E)
  • A PhD qualification or equivalent terminal degree. (D)

Work Experience/ Teaching

  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practice in Contemporary Art Practices, and in writing. (E)
  • A good understanding of student learning needs and the ability to plan challenging and innovative learning activities at undergraduate and postgraduate level. (E) Experience of teaching in a Higher Education environment. (E)
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, monographs, exhibition catalogues, etc. (D)
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding employability in the creative industries and of the global changes faced by the cultural sector. (D)
  • Experience of supervising PhD students. (D)

Research

  • Ability to engage in research and generate outputs of a standard required for submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework. (E)
  • Experience in applying for funding to support research activities. (E)

Technical Skills

  • Relevant experience of appropriate word-processing and presentation software and social media communication methods. (D)
  • Education and/or practical experience in other disciplines, such as literature, philosophy, history, film studies, etc. (D)
