Faculty Open Position

2. Position and the number of opening: Rank Open, Tenured (Professor)/Tenure-Track
(Associate professor or Lecturer) (1)
*A lecturer at Hiroshima University is equivalent to the North American tenure-track
assistant professor.
3. Commencing date of employment: October 1, 2018
4. Terms of employment:The tenure-track period not exceeding six (6) years is set by the

International Center only for applicant appointed as an associate professor or an lecturer.
Based on the University rules regarding its tenure-track system, the tenure-track
associate professor will undergo a tenure review within six (6) months prior to completion
of the term of appointment, and having successfully passed the review process, he or she
will be promoted to a tenured professor. The tenure-track lecturer will undergo the
similar process to be promoted to a tenured associate professor. The tenure review
referred to here is an index created unique to the International Center to evaluate the
faculty member's achievements in terms of research, teaching and managing activities.

6. Teaching responsibilities

 Undergraduate level (education courses for international students): – All levels of
Japanese language courses.
 Undergraduate level (discipline specific courses): Foundations of Foreign Language
Education, Foreign Language Teaching Methodology (Japanese/English), etc.
 Graduate level (master's programs): Introduction to Applied Linguistics Research
(English), etc.
 Graduate level (doctoral programs): Research in Applied Linguistics (English) , etc.
* In addition to the courses listed above, he or she may be asked to teach other general
education courses and/or discipline specific courses in other departments and graduate
schools.
* Active programmatic involvement and close collaboration with our faculty to advance
the Japanese language program is also expected.

7. Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for this position are following:

(1) A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in hand by the date of appointment in any of the
following areas: Japanese language education, linguistics, pedagogy or closely
related field).
(2) Ability to supervise Ph.D. dissertations with experience in supervising master's
theses and/or doctoral dissertations.
(3) Excellent record of scholarship and a credible research agenda in the field of
specialization stated above.
(4) Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English to conduct classroom
instruction and to supervise research projects in both languages.
(5) Demonstrated excellence in teaching Japanese language at the university level.
(6) Ability and willingness to use ICT for educational purposes.
* In addition, experience in curriculum and materials development for Japanese
language is desirable.

of your five major publications or presentations.)
(3) Major educational activities and teaching experience

(5) Major activities in university/institutional management and administration
(6) List of acquired external funding over the last five years
(7) Statement of intent (Please describe your interests in teaching and research in
approximately 1,000 words, should you take this position.)
(8) Five major publications or presentations (Reprints, photocopies, or books)

* All of these documents may be in either English or Japanese. In addition, applicants are
requested to submit the documents (1)~(7) in Word 2007/2010/2013 or PDF files on a
CD-ROM, or a USB memory stick, in addition to the hardcopies outlined above.

11. Selection procedure

(1) Selection will be made based on all application documents submitted.
(2) Applicants may be asked for additional documents. Those who pass the initial
document review will be invited for a campus interview or an on-line interview,
which will include teaching demonstration in English, and will be informed of
interview date, time and format. Please note that Hiroshima University will not
provide for the reimbursement of interview travel expenses incurred by candidates.

12. Employment status

(1) If you are agreeable to the application of the Discretionary Labor System for
Professional Work, you are deemed to work for 7 hours and 45 minutes a day and 38
hours and 45 minutes a week. If not, working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 (from
Monday to Friday) and break time is from 12:00 to 13:00.
(2) Workdays are from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) in principle.
(3) Holidays are Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in principle.

13. Salary, etc.

(1) The annual salary system will be applied to successful candidates.
(Regulations Concerning Salaries of Hiroshima University Faculty Members will be
applied. Regulations Concerning Salaries of Hiroshima University Faculty Members
Employed under Annual Salary System will be applied.)
(2) Successful candidates may be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred for the trip
from their home or former place of work to the new place of work to assume their
post in accordance with the relevant regulations of Hiroshima University. For more

14. Evaluation

We conduct individual performance evaluations for all Hiroshima University faculty
members after their employment, numerically rate their performance, and salary and
benefits are commensurate with performance indicators.

(1) Probationary employment period: six (6) months
(Hiroshima University Work Regulations for Employees.)
