The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill the following part-time (40%) vacancy in the Department of Literature

Academic staff in the area of modern German literature

Job description

  • You will be assigned following lecturing duties: History of German literature 1 (BA, 3 ECTS, 30 hours, biennially from 2019), History of German literature 2 (BA, 3 ECTS, 30 hours, biennially from 2020), History of German culture (co-teaching, BA, 6 ECTS, 60 hours, biennially from 2019), and a Master course in modern German literature (MA, 6 ECTS, 45 hours, yearly). Furthermore, you will supervise BA and MA theses within the domain of German literature and cultural history.
  • You will expand the scientific research in the area of modern German literature and cultural history.
  • You will acquire and manage external funding (national and international).
  • You will offer scientific services: among others you play an active part in the various recruitment activities and you co-organize the activities of the Deutschcafé (for more information: seeé).


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in modern German literature and/or cultural history.
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • As a course unit coordinator, you are able to demonstrate that you master the language of instruction at the CEFR level C1 before the beginning of the module(s). As a course unit coordinator, you also master the language of administration, Dutch, or you are willing to gradually learn the language up to the CEFR level B2. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members by offering them an integration programme and provides adequate language tracks for course unit coordinators within the framework of the Flemish statutory language regulations.


We offer

  • a part-time position as a lecturer (or higher, depending on academic qualifications and professional experience) for a period of 3 years. The appointment is renewable after positive evaluation;
  • the date of appointment will be 1 October 2019;
  • a full time gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.255,06 to € 6.272,13;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
