The mission of the USC Rossier School of Education is to prepare leaders to achieve educational equity through practice, research and policy. We work to improve learning opportunities and outcomes in urban settings and to address disparities that affect historically marginalized groups. We teach our students to value and respect the cultural context of the communities in which they work and to interrogate the systems of power that shape policies and practices. Through innovative thinking and research, we strive to solve the most intractable educational problems.

The mission of the USC Rossier School of Education is to prepare leaders to achieve educational equity through practice, research, and policy. The Organizational Change and Leadership Program and this Organizational Change and its Effectiveness course are critical contributors to the mission. Specifically, this course is designed to apply theory, research and the knowledge and expertise each participant brings about organizational change and effectiveness to the strengthening of organizational cultures and performance, building just and equitable workplaces and fields of practice. This course examines the many forms and stages in which organizational change occurs, understanding and identifying the elements in our internal and external environments that facilitate or hinder performance and change, focusing on values and vision, establishing the need for change, building trust and relationships, fostering equity and inclusion, and generating, implementing and assessing policies and practices that are responsive to identified needs and the contexts and communities in which they will operate. The course examines the following types of questions: What organizational models/frameworks/theories can we use to better identify, diagnose and address challenges in our organizations, institutions, and fields of practice?; What conditions influence the performance of organizations?; How do we create cultural models and settings that are inclusive, equitable, antiracist and culturally responsive?; Why are some organizational structures, systems, and cultures better able to problem solve and adapt and innovate than others?; and What leadership mindsets and attributes are needed to guide our organizations and the people in them through rapid and complex periods of change? Each week of the course, we together build a working knowledge of the research about organizational change and effectiveness and apply it in practice to the study of a wide variety of organizations, including our own. We seek for students to leave each class session with concrete actions they can bring directly into their own organizations and fields. Throughout this course, we focus on becoming compassionate and scholarly leaders to allow our workplaces and communities of practice to adapt and thrive as we build equity through research, policy, and practice.

Adjunct Faculty: USC reserves the “Adjunct Faculty” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty may teach one class, regardless of the number of units the class is, each semester (summer, fall and spring).
