  • NYU Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions (MPAP) Music Technology Program seeks qualified candidates to teach in the following fields:

Advanced Computer Music (Graduate Level)
Focuses on artistic creation with digital audio, honing both technical and aesthetic skills. Students work through exercises using a variety of platforms, learn to critique and help improve each other's work, and explore unfamiliar techniques and styles to extend and enrich the idioms of their prior practice. Students analyze landmark compositions from the history of computer music as well as contemporary electronic genres. Course culminates with a public performance of student work. 

Mixing in the Digital Audio Workstation (Graduate & Undergraduate Combined)
This course explores the art and craft of mixing records, with special attention to “mixing in the box” (via a digital audio workstation). Focus on methodology and technique, with particular emphasis on establishing balances, using such tools as compression and automation to enhance dynamics and develop unique coloration. Examines intersection of technology, budgets, and the marketplace. Students execute their own mixes, with guidance and critique from the instructor. 

Electronic Music Performance (Graduate & Undergraduate Combined)
This course is designed for instrumentalists, composers, and electronic musicians who want to explore performing with electronic music (analog or digital/software-based) using historical and contemporary methods in an ensemble performance environment. Techniques for live sound processing, synthesis or interactive elements can be integrated into their work using alternative controllers and devices. An end-of-semester concert will be planned. 

Fundamentals of Music Technology (Undergraduate Level)
A general introduction to the fundamental concepts of music technology including  the physics of sound, room and musical acoustics, analog and digital audio, sound recording, mixing, and mastering,  as well as analog and digital sound synthesis and sampling  techniques. 

Midi for Non-Majors  (Undergraduate Level)
An introduction to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) with an emphasis on sequencing, production and arranging techniques. Open to students without previous experience in music technology. 

Digital Electronics Lab  (Undergraduate Level)
Hands-on lab accompanying Digital Electronics Lecture. Lab sessions will contain hands-on experience with logic circuits & microcontrollers. The course culminates with a student developed final project. 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in music or music technology or equivalent combination of education and professional experience

  • Previous teaching experience 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum of 5 years experience and significant achievement in the field

  • Teaching at the Graduate level in the field

  • For Advanced Computer Music: Expertise in artistic creation with digital audio, honing both technical and aesthetic skills either academically, professionally or both. In-depth knowledge of the history of computer music as well as contemporary electronic genres is especially preferred.

  • For Mixing in the Digital Audio Workstation: Expertise in mixing music via a digital audio workstation academically and professionally. 

  • For Electronic Music Performance: Expertise in electronic music performance & composition (ideally all of the following: analog (including traditional instruments & analog synths) & digital (software-based & programming) either academically, professionally or both.

  • For Fundamentals of Music Technology: Expertise in fundamental concepts of music technology including but not limited to MIDI and sequencing, the basics of digital audio, sound recording, mixing and sound synthesis either academically, professionally or both.

  • For Midi for Non-Majors: Expertise in MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) either academically, professionally or both. Prior experience in teaching it to Non-Majors is especially preferred.

  • For Digital Electronics Lab: Expertise in hands-on lab teaching Digital Electronics either academically, professionally or both.
