Adjunct Instructor, Arts Leadership

The University of Southern California’s Graduate-Level Arts Leadership Program (ARTL) invites applications for an adjunct faculty to teach a course in Executive Leadership in the Arts in the USC Graduate Arts Leadership Program. This is a 2-credit course that meets weekly in the Fall semester on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:20.

ARTL is a program that has been designed for students engaged in any of the arts disciplines who recognize that the rapidly changing world of the 21st century requires a new idea of leadership and have a passion to become the dynamic arts leaders of the present and future. The curriculum combines theory and practice and has emphases in executive leadership, contemporary issues that are affecting the arts, innovative organizational models and redefining the relationship between arts organizations and the communities within which they are embedded. A faculty member is sought who has expertise and experience in Executive Leadership positions in a nonprofit arts institution who can work alongside similarly highly motivated colleagues in the ARTL program.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in and experience with leadership roles in the nonprofit arts in the contemporary world in which the drive for social change, the existential climate crisis and the explosion of new technologies are remaking the environment for arts organizations and its leaders. We are particularly interested in candidates whose vision of executive arts leadership has been honed through both experience and imagination and who possess a dynamic, forward-thinking approach to arts leadership.

With a student cohort that is largely BIPOC, gender expansive, and with a wide range of ages and experiences, the applicant must be at adept at teaching, communicating and empathizing with an extraordinarily diverse student population.

While the program is housed in the Thornton School of Music, it is a multi-disciplinary program and applicants with a background in any arts discipline are encouraged to apply.
