General Description

The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University is seeking an adjunct lecturer to join the Department of Music Engineering and Technology to teach a course in Musical Acoustics.  This position will serve the undergraduate program in Music and Recording Arts, the Master of Arts in Recording Arts, and the Master of Arts in Acoustics programs.

Located in the heart of Baltimore's Mount Vernon Cultural District, the Peabody Institute was founded in 1857 as America's first academy of music. Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level. Each year Peabody stages nearly 1000 major public concerts and performances. Peabody is one of the nine divisions that comprise the Johns Hopkins University.

Qualifications

Required Credentials/Skills/Experience

  • Completed graduate degree in physics, engineering, acoustics, audio, or a closely related discipline. 
  • Educational or professional background in music. A specific music degree is not required, but a passion for both physics and music is expected.
  • Ability to teach foundational physics, wave mechanics, vibrations, and acoustics pertaining to music, sound generation and propagation, sound in space, and various musical instruments.
  • Intermediate/advanced understanding of musical instruments acoustics (including strings, percussion, pipes, membranes, horns, reeds/winds and the human voice).
  • Intermediate/advanced understanding of electroacoustic transducers and their applications in adapted and emerging musical instruments.
  • Minimum two years prior teaching experience in higher education.
  • Willingness and ability to lead in-person, hybrid or virtual instruction of up to 12 students.
  • Capability to teach in English.

Desired Credentials/Skills/Experience

  • Demonstrated experience intersecting technical understanding with creative applications.
  • Ongoing/previous research in physics, wave mechanics, and acoustics pertaining to music, sound generation and propagation, sound in space, and various musical instruments.
  • Ongoing/previous research in electroacoustic transducers and their applications in adapted and developing musical instruments.
  • Ongoing/previous research in Psychoacoustics and the impact of complex sound fields on human perception and human condition (a candidate with such a background may also be considered for teaching a course on Psychoacoustics)

  • During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
