Concordia Dalian China (CDC) is a cooperative academic initiative between Concordia University Chicago and Dalian Shipping College in Dalian, China. Dalian, China, located in northeast Asia is situated at the tip of China’s Liaodong Peninsular. It is a large, modern port city known as a financial, shipping and logistics center for the region.  It is also known for its beaches and many lush parks and squares. This program is in its final review by the provincial education authorities of People’s Republic of China (PRC).

 

This global academic opportunity provides a pathway for Chinese students to complete three years of study in Dalian and, for those who desire a bachelor’s degree, a final two years of coursework at Concordia University Chicago. In 2016, Concordia Dalian China will begin offering a program in early childhood education. The three-year program will provide students will practical/vocational education for working early childhood centers in China. Students desiring a professional bachelor’s degree will then articulate to Concordia-Chicago for two years of additional education in theory, practice and leadership.

 

To support the early childhood education program in Dalian, a kindergarten (ages 3 to 6) will be built on-site. The facility will provide a laboratory experience for the students enrolled in the program, while serving the community with a much-needed quality childhood development program. Additional degree programs in education and business are planned for the future.

 

While the initial class is expected to number between 100 and 200, program capacity has been built for up to 3,000 students. Concordia University Chicago is developing the entire curriculum and assisting in identification of faculty and support staff in China. Dalian Shipping College is providing facilities and systems support.

 

Job Overview

 

Concordia Dalian China seeks candidates for the position of Director of Language Development and Mentoring. This position will have short term and long term goals to build an English as a Second Language department that aligns with the mission and vision of Concordia Dalian China.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop and establish leadership in creating an international program with a United States university. 

 

Responsibilities/Duties: 

 

  • In conjunction with curriculum committees, creates academic English skill development courses including syllabi.
  • With the Provost and Academic Director, trains faculty to effectively understand the language curriculum and delivers instruction through a curriculum mapping management system.
  • Ensures that the testing, placement, and language instruction of students aligns with their identified needs.
  • Teaches the first semester of language development courses.
  • Creates and oversees a tutoring and mentoring program for students in order to provide student support and ensure academic success.
  • Establishes and manages an English Language Institute in support of the academic and cultural preparation needed to successfully complete a bachelor’s degree in the United States.

 

Skill Sets: 

 

  • Masters degree in applied linguistics with specialization in English as a Second language, TESOL or DELTA.
  • Experience in teaching academic English to Chinese students preferred.
  • Intercultural competence and the ability to foster collaboration and trust required.
  • Excellent communication and management skills.
  • Proficiency with technology including Microsoft Office, virtual meeting spaces such as Skype and Adobe Connect.
  • Ability to work well with students, faculty, and staff demonstrating excellent character, high integrity, and a good professional reputation.
  • English and Chinese language fluency preferred.

 

Additional Information:

 

Orientation will be provided at the Concordia Chicago campus. Support from the Concordia administration and curriculum committees will be ongoing. Leadership team meetings in Dalian, China will take place prior to the projected start of the semester in September, 2016. Salary and benefits provided will be commensurate with qualifications. Housing will be provided.
