UMUC is a globally-focused university serving more than 80,000 students worldwide. It has been delivering education to the U.S. military on Asia and Pacific Rim installations for 60 years. UMUC seeks experienced faculty to travel and teach America’s soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors, and their family members, in undergraduate degree programs at military installations primarily in mainland Japan and Okinawa.

Bridge Program collegiate traveling faculty (CTF) are professionals charged with the responsibility of providing a quality learning experience for University of Maryland University College (UMUC) students. Bridge faculty develop and deliver quality instruction to English Language Learners (ELL) in academic English focusing on the development of their speaking, reading, listening and writing skills.

New faculty selected for these one-year positions will teach a minimum of two class sections a session in on-base education centers in UMUC’s unique 8-week, 5-session academic calendar. With few exceptions, new faculty will live off-base and commute by car to their classes. Moving to new locations 2-3 times per year will be the norm. In most locations, except Guam, full-privilege, base access cards will allow utilization of on-base gyms, commissaries, gas stations, convenience stores, shopping facilities (PX, BX or NEX), banks, libraries, travel/tour agencies, and post offices. Most common teaching assignments are on U.S. military bases in mainland Japan and Okinawa.   Faculty members are required to travel as assigned within the division.

Some annual contracts are available to teach on Guam, but the compensation package is different. Base privileges are much more limited.

These position openings should be distinguished from “visiting professor” programs that are frequently used by overseas universities. These UMUC Asia faculty positions rely much more on a faculty member’s ability to function independently.

UMUC is seeking professionals who can combine academic credentials and teaching experience with travel savvy, enthusiasm for educating our troops, and a tolerance for adventure. All positions require a minimum of a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a doctorate preferred.  Although these positions are for on-site teaching, each on-site class has an embedded online classroom where some course activities are conducted and the course materials are located.  Qualified applicants will have:

  • Must be able to pass a U.S. and/or local background check and must have U.S. SOFA or appropriate VISA status to be eligible for military base pass

Applicants must be eligible for individual logistical support in host countries and, because it’s required for certain locations, must be U.S. citizens.  In addition, all applicants must have a favorable background check under the terms of the agreements between the United States and the host countries. Faculty members are required to accept course and location assignments, although preferences are given consideration. Faculty members may sponsor their spouses, who may also be eligible to receive a full-privilege ID card.

BENEFITS:

UMUC offers an excellent benefits package, including travel expense reimbursement, military base privileges, health insurance, and retirement plans. A generous compensation package includes base pay, housing allowance, reimbursable relocation allowance, currency adjustment, and optional overload teaching pay. UMUC will cover costs for air travel to/from the initial and final assignment destinations.
