Education Enhancement Faculty Position - Assistant Professor 

American University of Antigua, AUA, is seeking an Assistant Professor for the Education Enhancement Department (EED). The EED provides academic support for our students and faculty in the School of Medicine and Pre-Med Programs.

About the Opportunity 
EED faculty members report to the Chair of Education Enhancement and work with students individually or in small groups to promote their cognitive development; to increase learning skills; and their ability to pass required medical licensing exams. EED faculty are required to teach at least one education enhancement class per semester. The EED faculty also works with medical education faculty to provide professional development opportunities for enhancing teaching. This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of medicine and medical care within the US while living and working at our basic sciences campus on the Caribbean island of Antigua earning a competitive potentially tax exempt income. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Interpretation

o Displays a strong background in learning theory and related strategies. 
o Identifies and assesses the learning, development and adjustment characteristics and needs of medical students. 
o Uses assessment data to develop appropriate interventions and programs for individual students and/or groups.

  • Direct Interventions for Students

o Provides interventions for medical students to support the teaching process and to maximize learning helping students become more effective learners. 
o Actively advises medical students during the academic year on a one-to one or small group basis. 
o Develops online resources to enhance student academic performance.

  • Communication and Relationship Skills

o Commitment to and active involvement in ongoing student advising 
o Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
o Ability to work both independently and to collaborate with others. 
o Communicates and participates effectively with medical students, faculty, University leadership and the community. 
o Serves on University committees as directed by the Chair of EED. 
o Participates fully and actively as a faculty member of EED and AUA. 
o Enhances student classroom performance by assisting faculty in various learning opportunities.

  • Program Development

o Assists in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programs, workshops and initiatives to meet learning objectives and adjustment needs.

  • Learning Support Program Implementation

o Develops and delivers a planned and coordinated program of learning support services, including formal courses, workshops and small group interactions.

  • Other responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

o Attending and participating in special events, tasks and programs as necessary. 
o Participation in periodic evening and weekend duties, such as student workshops, meetings and volunteer opportunities. 
o Other duties as assigned by administrators and the Chair of EED. 

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Education, Psychology, Advising, Educational Psychology or related field required. Master's Degree considered if working toward PhD.
  • 4+ years of experience in similar employment.
  • Solution and performance oriented.
  • Attends professional conferences and stays well-informed in their profession.
  • Ability to travel freely to the United States.

  • Capacity to work closely, effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students in a fast paced and creative environment.
  • Desire to participate in research initiatives.
  • Desire to be an active visionary helping to create an exceptional learning environment where students can reach their goal of becoming physicians and achieving the residency of their choice.
