Senior lecturer in special education

The research environment in special education at Karlstad University is in an expansive period and we would like to have applicants interested in partaking actively in developing project ideas and research applications. Duties are primarily in the special education teacher programme and the specialisations literacy development and learning disabilities, which is why we welcome applicants with relevant experience in these fields.  

The Department of Educational Studies has a staff of around 80 members but needs to recruit more staff. We contribute to all teacher education programmes at Karlstad University. Training to be a teacher is to invest in a profession of the future to which you, we, and our combined expertise will contribute to ensure that trainee teachers will graduate to make a difference.  

Duties

Duties may include the following areas: 

  • Teaching net-based and campus undergraduate and Master-level courses, mainly in Swedish, and occasionally in English
  • Teaching commissioned courses
  • Course and programme coordination
  • Supervision at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels
  • Appointment as examiner at the undergraduate and master levels
  • Promoting a dynamic and active research environment and participating in departmental research seminars
  • Active participation in developing the preschool programmes

Time is set aside (20%) for research/professional development with extended time if external funding is granted. The successful candidate is expected to participate in departmental life on a daily basis.  

Qualification requirements

To be qualified for employment as a senior lecturer the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctorate or have obtained equivalent research qualifications or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve.

Equal weight will be given to research and teaching expertise in the ranking of candidates. As teaching is done in both Swedish (primarily) and English, good command of the two languages is required.

Completed course in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education or equivalent qualifications is also a requirement. Assessment Criteria

Special weight is given to  

  • Documented experience of teaching in higher education. Experience of teaching in special teacher education programmes at Master level is a valuable

Considerable weight is given to

  • Teaching skills, assessed on the basis documented activities and experience of planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching at various levels.Documented production of educational materials and pedagogical development projects are valuable qualifications
  • Research skills, assessed on the basis of the breadth, depth, topicality, originality, independence and scope of activities. Having successfully attracted research funding in competition with others and cooperation with external partners are valuable qualifications
  • Abilities to cooperate, to create good relationships with colleagues and students and to take initiatives.

Valuable qualifications:  

  • Documented experience of supervision/mentorship at undergraduate, master and doctoral levels
  • Experience of professional practice in preschool, primary and secondary education and special school
  • Research/teaching experience in the fields of literacy development and/or special school activities
  • Broad professional experience, for example, qualifications and interest in contributing to several of the department’s programmes and activities.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, non-fixed term employment with starting date at the earliest convenience. A trial period may be required.

  • max ten academic publications and max five works designed to convey knowledge, e.g. textbooks, educational software, or popular science articles.
