Remuneration:  The successful applicant will receive a Faculty of Arts Research Living Allowance. Current value: $26,682 p.a. 2017 full-time rate (tax-free stipend); (indexed plus allowances as per RTP/MGE stipend conditions:


The Opportunity


A PhD position is being sought in Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science.


The successful candidate will be part of a 3 year interdisciplinary research project on mind wandering and spontaneous thought in wakefulness and sleep.


Within this project, the candidate will be expected to conduct an empirical study about the occurrence, contents, and timing of spontaneous thoughts during sleep and wakefulness.


In addition, the candidate will develop their own research projects on topics related to the empirical study and to theoretical issues concerning waking mind wandering, sleep, dreaming, and related topics (such as mental agency, attention, mindfulness, and first-person methods).


Please note applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.


Candidate Requirements


The successful applicant will have excellent academic track records in Philosophy of Mind and/or in cognate disciplines (such as Cognitive Science and/or Psychology).


While a specific background in philosophy is not required, the successful candidate will be expected to have a strong interest in broader theoretical issues in philosophy and consciousness science, as well as the ability and willingness to engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research. Candidates with experience in running empirical experiments and analysing data will be preferred.

Candidates will be required to meet Monash entry requirements, which include English-language skills. Scholarship holders must be enrolled full time and on campus.


Successful applicants will be expected to enrol by 1 September, 2017. There may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.

EOIs shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant's suitability
  • A statement about the applicant's experience and capability to conduct experimental work
  • A PhD research proposal not exceeding 1000 words in length
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works
  • A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
