Position as assistant professor of English linguistics, proficiency and language acquisition

At the Department of Culture and Global Studies, The Faculty of Humanities, a position as assistant professor of English linguistics, proficiency and language acquisition is available from 1 December 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 3 years. Workplace is Aalborg.




The primary tasks of the position are research in English linguistics, proficiency and language acquisition as well as teaching in the linguistic dimension of the International Business Communication programmes in English. The applicant must have solid knowledge of modern English language and must be able to document research in the field at assistant professorship level within one or several of the following areas:

  • language acquisition

  • corpus linguistics

  • English grammar

  • written language proficiency

In terms of teaching, the position is primarily affiliated to the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in International Business Communication, English, but it may also include teaching obligations in other programmes under the School of Culture and Global Studies, including the Bachelor’s Programme in Language and International Studies, the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in English, and the Master’s Programme in Culture, Communication and Globalization.

In addition to the applicant's own research area, the position includes teaching in core English language disciplines, i.e. grammar, translation to and from English/Danish, text revision and written text production, as well as project supervision on all levels. Applicants who are qualified to teach in other areas of the programmes mentioned above should specify this in their application.

As teaching, supervision and examination activities are conducted in English in the Business Communication programmes at Aalborg University, and as teaching includes translation to and from English/Danish, the applicant must master English as well as Danish at a high academic level. The applicant must also be able to supervise and assess written and oral presentation as well as English proficiency.

Experience with teaching English as a foreign language is considered helpful for the position, but not mandatory. It would also be an advantage, but is not a prerequisite, if the applicant has experience with PBL (problem based learning). In any case, the new employee is expected to acquaint himself/herself with the principles of PBL during the course of the assistant professorship period.

The new employee will be affiliated to the Department's research group in Languages and Linguistics with the opportunity of affiliation to other research groups of his/her choice.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills and to be able to participate in team teaching as well as the planning of teaching and research activities with colleagues. In addition, the applicant must be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers with different cultural and political backgrounds.

Daily attendance at the Department is required. In addition, the applicant must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities in the Department and in the study programmes.

Assistant professorship

A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.
