Job description

The Department of Art now seeks to make an appointment of Professor of arts-based research and pedagogy. The professor is expected to be an exceptional researcher and pedagogue, familiar with international contemporary theories and practices related to arts-based research, which includes the relationships, similarities and differences between artistic research, practice-led research and art research. The professor should be eager to bring his/her particular expertise to the vibrant and developing environment in the Department of Art.


Arts-based research can be understood to be at the crossroads where pedagogy and artistic practices intersect with different contemporary theories, and qualitative research methods and methodologies. The ideal candidate should be able to articulate the relationship between different theories and practices, tools and techniques, and local and global approaches for arts-based research. Based on this articulation, the professor is expected to help to develop a vision for innovative doctoral research, and guide and strengthen existing research practices at all levels. The professor is expected to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration.


Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding in arts-based research and pedagogy in relationship to a broad range of societal, cultural, and educational theories and contexts. Candidates are expected to have an ambition for broadening the field of arts-based research in Finland, to embrace international and transnational approaches and perspectives, and to work across the schools and fields within Aalto University.



The position of Professor of arts-based research and pedagogy is subject to external evaluation. Applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: research merits, teaching, international, collaborative and transdisciplinary competencies, and activity and leadership in academic communities. Research merits will be emphasized in the selection process.


The main teaching language is English. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required.


Applicants are expected to have doctoral degree in a relevant field. The candidate will have demonstrated ability to teach at university level, develop teaching materials and engage various learners.


Tenure track in Aalto University

The position will be placed on the Aalto University Tenure Track. Individuals on the tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Launched only in 2010, the tenure track has attracted a wide range of international applicants, giving Aalto University the possibility of recruiting top experts and young research talent to join the Aalto University community.


Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific/artistic research and/or artistic work, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

  • List of publications, including possible artistic publications (with the 5 most significant publications highlighted and a brief explanation of each)
  • Summary of teaching experience (max. 2 pages)
  • A description of your teaching philosophy (1 page)
  • A description of your views regarding the present situation and the future development of the arts-based research (max. 2 pages)
