The internationally esteemed Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s most multidisciplinary unit of research and teaching in educational sciences and teacher education. The aim of the Faculty’s research and teaching is to optimally realise the cultural and social potential of people for the benefit of individuals and humanity.


The Faculty of Educational Sciences is a dynamic, inspiring and international working and studying environment that has invested in state-of-the-art research and teaching infrastructure. We provide undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education that qualifies students for both the teaching profession and other positions requiring general academic expertise. Some 600 students complete an undergraduate degree at the Faculty each year. We also offer the pedagogical studies required to qualify as a teacher to students majoring in other faculties’ disciplines. Approximately 600 students studying to become a subject teacher annually complete these studies at the Faculty to obtain teaching qualifications.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.


The duties of the assistant professor/associate professor/professor include research and development of teaching and learning in the field of language didactics. Applicants are expected to have expertise in one of the following fields of research:


• Language learning
• Language teaching and language learning environments
• Language teacher education
• Assessment of language teaching and learning.


In addition, the assistant professor’s/associate professor's/professor’s duties include instruction in the field, the supervision of theses and dissertations, and the management and development of research in national and international networks.




An appointee to an assistant/associate professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.


An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.


The appointee must be competent in the language in which he or she provides instruction, in this case primarily Finnish. The appointee must also have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.


Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, he or she must attain a level of Finnish proficiency suitable for everyday communication within three years of taking up the position.




When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as scientific commissions, positions of trust and international relations. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.




The salary for the position will be based on levels 7 (assistant/associate professor) and 8 to 10 (professor) of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately €4,500−8,000, depending on the appointee’s scholarly qualifications and career stage.
