The current key areas of research are visual design, digital media, visual culture, design, art, welfare architecture and emerging technologies, as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.


The Aalto Visual Communication Design (AVCD) research group is in the Department of Media, which is part of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The group is actively involved in researching the role of visual communication design and broader design thinking in a wide range of applied areas with societal impact, including sustainability, health and well-being.

Main tasks and requirements


In recent years storytelling has emerged as a valuable tool for diagnosis, treatment and therapy in a number health related and medical fields. The Aalto Visual Communication Design research group is looking for candidates for a postdoctoral position in the area of visual storytelling for health and well-being. The selected postdoctoral researcher will work on design and evaluation of visual storytelling tools specifically created for the elderly with the aim of supporting them in improving and maintaining their sense of belonging, self-worth, and social connectedness.


The position is fixed-term and will be filled for two years (2018-2019), with starting date preferably by January 2018. The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University.  Employment includes occupational health care and social security benefits.


Qualified candidates for the postdoctoral position should hold a doctoral degree and have adequate research experience in the field of visual communication design, interaction design, or other fields relevant to the position. Ability for multidisciplinary research and technical skills are considered to be advantageous. Applicants are expected to be at the early stages of their research careers and show potential for future development. Excellent English language skills are required.
