The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of KU Leuven (Belgium) invites applications for an academic position in the field of “Educational Philosophy and Theory”. This position is situated in the research unit Education, Culture and Society (ECS).







Research in educational philosophy and theory. Applicants will be required to establish an innovative research program in the philosophy of education, related to one or more areas of education (in a broad sense), aimed at further developing educational theory as a concrete answer to public and common educational matters of concern.

The candidate should be willing to engage in obtaining competitive research funding. The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally-competitive research program, with research output at a high international level, and to supervise PhD studies in the field of educational philosophy and theory.



The teaching assignment will mainly include courses in philosophy of education and educational theory in the BA and MSc programs of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. Most of these courses are taught in Dutch. The applicant will also be required to supervise MSc theses and research internships. Actual teaching assignments will be mutually agreed upon between the applicant, the coordinator and colleagues of the ECS research unit, the Program Director of the BA/MSc, the Vice-Dean for Education, and the Dean of the Faculty.



The candidate is expected to take up administrative and policy responsibilities within the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. She/he is also expected to share her/his expertise in educational philosophy and theory with others, for instance by giving lectures to an audience of practitioners, by the organization of workshops and courses, or by participating in peer review and in scientific panels.



Candidates are expected to have promising research potential, as evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals that demonstrate expertise in educational philosophy and theory. They are also expected to have a broad interest in and knowledge of the field of educational philosophy and theory beyond their specific research interests.


Applicants are expected to have high-level instructional qualities and skills necessary to train and teach future Bachelors and Masters in educational sciences. The successful candidate should be prepared to develop these qualities and skills further.


The applicant is also expected to have the necessary interpersonal and communication skills and leadership capacities to collaborate with colleagues, and to build international networks.


The position requires a PhD in philosophy of education, a doctoral degree in educational sciences with a specialization in philosophy of education, or a doctoral degree in a related field in the humanities with a clear orientation to the philosophy of education.


The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch to the required standard.



We are offering full time employment in a dynamic and internationally oriented research environment. The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenure track for a period of five years. After this period and a positive evaluation they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
