Associate Professor in Ancient History Aalborg University, Department of Culture and Global Studies Denmark



At The Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Culture and Global Studies a position as associate professor in ancient history is open for appointment from 1 January 2018 or soon thereafter. Workplace: Aalborg.




The successful applicant will be an innovative researcher who publishes at international level, is embedded in international research networks and offers a documented track record in acquiring external funding. The preferred candidate is also a committed teacher with experience in giving lectures and seminars as well as supervising student work.

She/he will become a member of the research unit Cultural Encounters in Pre-Modern Societies. For the candidate's work to fit into the research strategy and to complement the existing competencies of its members, the Department of Culture and Global Studies is particularly interested in applications with a research focus on the history of war, violence and coercion - and its political institutionalisations - in the ancient world. 

The teaching obligations for this position will primarily be within the BA and MA programmes in history at the Department of Culture and Global Studies at the Aalborg Campus, but the position may also include teaching and supervision obligations in other programmes under the School of Culture and Global Studies. Applicants who are qualified to teach within other areas of the programmes mentioned should state this in their application. A plan for the development of new courses which could further integrate ancient history with other disciplines of history are welcome. The current study regulations may be accessed here: 

Teaching and supervision activities at the BA and MA programmes in history are conducted in Danish, and applicants must be able to supervise and assess written and oral presentations in Danish. Non-native applicants should demonstrate working knowledge of Danish.

It will be considered an advantage if applicants have experience with problem-based learning which is Aalborg University's pedagogical model.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers and students with different cultural and political backgrounds.

Daily attendance at the Department is required. In addition, the new employee must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department, School and research group.

Qualification requirements 

It is presupposed that applicants for the position as associate professor have research qualifications corresponding to the level achieved from a successful employment period as an assistant professor/researcher, or achieved otherwise. The applicants must document scientific production at an international level. Furthermore, it is presupposed that the applicants have received supervision and pedagogical upgrading and a positive written evaluation of their teaching qualifications. Moreover it will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite, that applicants have experience with Problem Based Learning (PBL) which is Aalborg University's teaching philosophy.

An expert assessment committee will assess all candidates.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
