Call for Applications:

PhD in Art and Design Education with a focus on teaching methods (Fachdidaktik)

Doctoral candidates will typically have completed an MA in Art Education or in Teaching Methods
in Art and Design or will hold an equivalent degree. The programme runs for three years.
Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH) offer a
wide range of teacher training programmes in art and design, extending from pre-primary to upper
secondary school. With our respective BA und MA courses, we train future art educators for every
educational level and all types of schools within the Swiss education system.

The new collaborative doctoral programme in Switzerland devised by the three partners aims to
provide the “missing link” within the education system. The envisaged doctoral programme will not
only facilitate a complete career for young academics in the field of teaching methods in art and
design education, but also provide a more substantial and robust research basis for this vital field
of knowledge within teacher education.

Together, the three partner institutions encompass the entire school system from pre-primary to
up-per-secondary schools. Whereas all three institutions cover the intermediate level (K6-9), only
PHZH educates teachers for the pre-primary and primary sectors, whereas ZHdK and ABKS
share a strong focus on upper-secondary schools. This means that doctoral candidates from all
school levels can be accommodated within the doctoral programme in teaching methods in Art
and Design Education, yet with different institutional “homes” and combinations of supervisors.

A majority of the doctoral research in teaching methods of Art and Design Education will be
located at the intersection of the scientific community of the partner institutions and beyond, as
well as of the in-school community of practitioners, thereby reflecting the programme’s foundation
on practical research. Consequently, doctoral candidates will be closely linked not only to national
and international researchers but also to trends and legislation affecting Art and Design Education
within the Swiss school system.

The programme’s scope and activities guarantee meaningful participation from members of all
partner institutions in terms of their expertise and specific methodologies. Also, its setup is tailored
to accommodate the anticipated group of ten participants and ensures that a majority of the
work done by doctoral students enrolled at ZHdK can be carried out locally in Zurich.

From the perspective of the participants, the geographical proximity of the programme partners will enable
doctoral candidates to benefit from both the programme’s international scope and its diversity of
experts, institutions and institutional cultures. They will be equipped with both subject-specific and
cross-functional qualifications and be able to establish a professional network.

The outline should include the following points:

o Motivation letter
o Description of the planned research including information as regards the basic research
question, its relevance and topicality, project targets and methodology
o Certificate of the degree on which the admission is based

Start of the programme: January 2018
