The Institute of Philosophy offers bachelor, master and advanced master programmes both in Dutch and in English and totals around one hundred PhD students. The Faculty has an elaborate national and international network and enjoys an excellent library.


The ERC Starting Grant Project HOM—Homo Mimeticus: Theory and Criticism led by Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo in conjunction with the Institute of Philosophy and the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven is advertising a 100% 2/3-year postdoc position in Literary Theory/Philosophy (starting date: January 1, 2018). Application deadline, November 1, 2017.HOM is a 5-year interdisciplinary project in the humanities funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and hosted by the  Institute of Philosophy and the Department of Literary Studies at KU Leuven. The goal of the project is to investigate the role mimesis (imitation) plays in modern English literature, science fiction films, and contemporary continental philosophy. 


  • Highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in Modern English Literature, Continental Philosophy, Film Studies (or related degree in the humanities).
  • Publications in international peer-reviewed journals and/or university presses.
  • Research project directly related to mimesis and/or its conceptual avatars (identification, mimicry, rivalry, scapegoating, simulation, affective contagion, mirror neurons, plasticity).
  • Enthusiasm for working across disciplinary boundaries, team-work, as well as independent, “out-of-the-box” thinking.
  • Written/oral proficiency in English.
  • Commitment to completing a postdoc project in at least one of the three disciplines internal to HOM.
