The department of Special Needs Education is one of the three departments at UiO's Faculty of Education. The department has today approximately 25 permanent employees that work with research, 14 temporary research fellows and postdoctoral fellows, in addition to 12 administrative employees. The department has approximately 800 students distributed between bachelor- and master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, as well as PhD-studies.

Applications are invited for a position in a Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in Neurodevelopmental Disorders to be based at the The department of Special Needs Education, University of Oslo.


Job description


The vacant position is embedded within the Effective Stuttering Treatmentproject (EST-project) financed by the Research Council of Norway. EST is a subproject in the research group Child Language and Learning. See for information about the research group.


Brief summary of the EST-project


There is currently a critical need for research to inform clinical practice guidelines in Norway and at an international level for management of preschool children who stutter. The aim of the EST-project is therefore to investigate and implement the most efficacious stuttering management option for preschool children.


A meta-analysis will be conducted to identify the most efficacious direct and indirect treatment for preschool children who stutter.This knowledge will inform the experimental groups for a randomized controlled trial (RCT). A waiting list control group will also be included in this trial.


Outcomes from this RCT will be implemented within a municipality of Norway targeting early childhood professionals (health nurses, preschool teachers, educational psychologists and speech language pathologists).

The PhD Research Fellow Position


The successful applicant will conduct their research as part of the EST–project in collaboration with the EST-project team. He/she will be responsible for:

  • Conducting a meta-analysis protocol and the final report/paper on stuttering management
    options within the Campbell Collaboration framework (main responsible).
  • Participating in designing and running the EST-intervention (co-responsible).
  • Development of Guidelines (co-responsible)
  • Publication of project results in international peer-reviewed journals and at scientific
    conferences (co-responsible)


We are seeking highly motivated candidates who have a particular interest in special education research and more specifically stuttering. The successful candidate will be required to participate actively in our research community including the EST-project team, Child Language and Learning research group and the department. Periods abroad are encouraged; we have international collaborators that may be possible hosts.


The appointment is for a period of 3 years with a possible extension to four years (including 25% duty work, f. ex. teaching).


The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. A prerequisite for this position is admission to the Faculty’s doctoral degree program and applicants’ formal and other qualifications for admission will be assessed.


Qualification requirements


Applicants must have strong analytical abilities and an eagerness to explore and learn. Clinical and/or theoretical experience with stuttering assessment and/or treatment is preferred.


Applicants must also satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD program. This includes:

  • Completion of a Master degree by the time of employment with a minimum grade B or equivalent (ECTS grading scale) in speech and language therapy or another relevant field (e.g., special needs education or psychology) or a similar higher education program (normally equivalent to two years /ECTS 120 credits), including a Master thesis or equivalent scientific records.

Proficient Norwegian and English language skills are required. Proficient Norwegian language skills are required for this as the successful candidate will be required to liaise with Norwegian speaking informants and parents.
