Job Summary

 

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan seeks applications for the Howard R. Marsh Visiting Professorship in Journalism for the fall and winter terms of the 2018-2019 academic year (September 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019). The Howard R. Marsh Endowment provides funds for a visiting appointment from a distinguished academic scholar or eminent professional journalist who studies journalism and news media.

 

Responsibilities*

 

The Marsh Visiting Professor is expected to teach two courses per term, engage in additional dialogue with students and faculty, pursue current professional or scholarly interests, and contribute to the direction of the Howard R. Marsh Center for the Study of Journalistic Performance. The Center, located in the Department of Communication Studies, supports scholarly research on democratic functions of the news media. In addition, the Marsh Visiting Professor gives a public lecture during the winter term.

 

Required Qualifications*

 

The individual selected for this appointment will contribute to the education of students in the Department and College of Literature, Science, and the Arts who are studying long-range factors affecting the ability of the news media to perform their functions in a democratic society, including press and government relationships, the economics of the news business, and the recruitment and career mobility of professional journalists.

This position may be covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
