Brief Description

The Centre for Researching Education and Labour (formally the Wits Education Policy Unit) seeks to fill a position for a part-time researcher, as part of an international research project investigating the role of skills development in industrial development in six developing countries. The project aims to explore not just whether or not skills development initiatives resulted in employment opportunities or not, but whether and how they contributed to inclusive industrial growth and transformation. The research will involve an empirical analysis of a set of skills development initiatives, linked to the development of theoretical tools to analyse the potential contribution of skills development initiatives to industrial development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn from an international team, as s/he will conduct research in South Africa in parallel with and comparison to researchers working in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Laos, and Vietnam.
The position is part time and the requirement will be the candidate to work for REAL for 2 days of the week. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who want to pursue a career in education policy/research.


This is a three year contract position, starting in February 2018.


Minimum Requirements

• A Masters degree in the Social Sciences is preferred (preferably Education/Economics/ Sociology/Political Science or allied disciplines.
• Academic/ work experience in related field
• Research experience in education systems, economic systems, labour markets, trade unions, and employer organisations. We require a writing sample.


Research experience on skills development, industrial development, or industrial sociology will be an added benefit, as will evidence of scholarly performance, English language proficiency, and good conceptual and writing skills.


The incumbent will be expected to:


• Conduct research and project manage activities under supervision of a research manager or his/her designate
• Find skills development projects to research, working with other project team members, and interface with companies and skills providers to secure sites for investigation.
• Prepare interview questions, collect, and analyse data.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and articles.
• Conduct data analysis with other project team members.
• Attend research seminars and other meetings.
• Make presentations at seminars, workshops and conferences as and when necessary.
