The Academy of Music and Drama (HSM) is located in the Artisten building in central Gothenburg and is part of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Gothenburg. The department trains and educates composers; musical artists; musicians in multiple genres; music, dance and theatre teachers; opera singers; and actors and has more than 600 students. The Academy of Music and Drama also conducts development work, postgraduate studies and research and engages in extensive outreach activities. The department has almost 200 employees.

Subject area description

Arts education dance encompasses different forms of learning in, about and through dance as an artistic form of expression. As a field of research, it studies pedagogical, bodily, choreographic and æsthetic aspects relevant to dance education.


The position is within HSM’s pedagogy unit and the teaching is conducted mainly within the purview of HSM’s teacher education mission. Unit faculty collaborate in courses in various aesthetic forms of expression, such as theatre, dance, movement/rhythmics and music, where the aim is to create a complete environment with teaching and research in mutual activities and operations.

Responsibilities mainly include teaching dance education and dance within the Master of Arts/Science in Upper Secondary Education programme and within other programmes. The teaching often takes place in group and seminar. The teaching language is Swedish.


Responsibilities include teaching, administration and development work as follows:


  • Educational planning, teaching and summative assessment, especially in dance education and dance in the department’s teacher education programmes;
  • Supervision of independent work at the first- and second-cycle levels within the department’s subject teacher education programmes;
  • Research in arts education;
  • Course development in collaboration with other programmes taught by department faculty;
  • Course coordination and course administration;
  • During the first three years – and with the possibility of extension – an assignment as programme coordinator for HSM’s dance teacher education is included.


As programme coordinator for the dance teacher education, you have particular responsibility for the specialised subject courses in the short- and long-term regarding content, academic foundations and progression. Together with the unit head and programme coordinators for music education and theatre education, you are expected to strive for collaboration and coordination among our three fine and applied arts teacher education programmes, as well as collaboration with external partners.


Qualifications for employment as a teacher are listed in chapter 4, section 3-4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s own appointments procedure. To qualify for employment as a senior lecturer in arts education dance, a PhD in a relevant discipline is required. The position in question also requires:

  • Documented experience in teaching at university level;
  • Documented experience in compulsory school or upper-secondary teaching in dance or other activities that might be deemed equivalent.

  • Breadth and depth of individual research;
  • Interpersonal skills and communication skills;
  • Teaching proficiency;
  • Experience in supervision and teaching in higher education;
  • Administrative proficiency and experience;
  • Documented leadership ability;
  • Experience from networking and collaboration, nationally and internationally;
  • Experience from professional work as a dancer or choreographer.



The applicant has undergone or is expected to complete university-level teaching education or has acquired the equivalent knowledge (15 HECs) in another documented way.


Employment for an indefinite period with at least 50% of full-time employment. The percentage of full-time employment depends upon the applicant’s skills profile. The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts offers probationary employment of 6 months. Employment begins as soon as possible or by agreement.
