We’re looking for a talented English language native professional writer and editor to join XJTLU’s Content and Media team.  The ideal candidate is passionate abouttelling the stories that will help build XJTLU’s international reputation as a leader in learning, teaching and research and is committed to international engagement and promoting higher education.  The incumbent will have impeccable professional skills in writing, editing, content development, story research, interviewing, fact-checking; s/he will also possess excellent coaching skills to help others develop their best writing abilities.

The Senior Writer/Editorwill prepare copy for high-profile projects including intensive writing and storytelling components; compose and edit persuasive, accurate, engaging copy for a variety of media; edit material for marketing applications by others from throughout the University; ensure consistency with the university's brand and voice; coach and support fellow writers in the department.


  • Write, edit and/or proofread materials in English including (but not limited to) stories and articles, brochures and prospectuses, student recruitment campaigns, newsletters, media releases, social media posts, web content, event promotion, advertising, briefings, backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points, video scripts, speeches, plans and reports;
  • Plan content development for complex publications and editorial projects targeting international audiences such as prospectuses, brochures, magazines or annual reports;
    • Develop and research story ideas for publication, which may include major feature stories or articles, long form, and multi-source stories with high visibility on complex or technical topics;
    • Edit original material developed by other departments for use in the website, news reports or any other publications noted above while ensuring accuracy, coherent messaging and a consistent voice;
      • Help establish and maintain UMC/University style standards such as AP or BBC style guidelines, branding guides and/or UMC office protocols;
      • Build and maintain a sound general knowledge of XJTLU academic and campus life, campaigns and issues in order to help respond effectively to both internal and external inquiries;
      • Conduct interviews with sources, perform research and/or “fact-check” as needed; maintain regular contacts with key sources to identify story themes;
      • Ensure that XJTLU communication materials are accurate, professional, adhere to organizational image and maintain a consistent “voice”;
      • Advise and collaborate with colleagues on editorial and publication methods; recommend changes and amendments to communications or publications;
        • Communicate with writers, editors, photographers, vendors, and contractors, and review publication process;
        • Check and approve content and information prior to sending to director and/or clients for approval;
        • Work efficiently and effectively within deadlines;
          • Serve as a resource in developing strategies that promote effective delivery of publications/editorials to target audiences;
          • Perform other duties as assigned.



  1. Two years of full time work experience in the same position in a college or university (part-time work experience is not accepted);
  • Five or more years of professional writing experience in a media organization, agency environment and/or a corporate or institutional setting;
    • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or related field (master’s degree is preferred);
    • Experience writing about education, research, business and/or technical fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and/or architecture is a plus;
    • Working knowledge of AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style and/or equivalents;
    • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and coordinate materials from multiple resources;
      • Demonstrated understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of marketing communications, public relations, and editorial content;
      • Strong research and analytical skills;
      • Extensive experience in planning and implementing complex publications/editorial projects;
      • Working knowledge of web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends;
  • Native English; written fluency in additional languages is a plus;
  • Demonstrated mastery of high-quality, professional-level concept development, copywriting, and editing;
  • Proven success writing for publication in print, web and other platforms;
  • Demonstrated ability to edit complex stories for both style and substance;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and a variety of other computer and internet based tools for communication, analysis and networking;
  • Ability to work flexible and/or extended hours including evenings or weekends; ability to travel occasionally on department business.

    • Ability to understand complex materials and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences; identify science or technology-based story ideas and distill complex concepts into clear, engaging copy;
    • Skillful project leader; resourceful and analytical problem solver with a well-developed ability to research, evaluate information, plan strategies and assess risk;
    • Tactful and enthusiastic with a “can-do” attitude; able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment under public scrutiny.
