We are seeking to appoint two specialists working on any aspect of history in the period between c. 1450 and c. 1830, and with expertise in one or more of the following geographical regions: Continental Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australasia. We are looking for candidates who are outstanding academic teachers, have strong track records of internationally excellent publications, and are able to offer clear evidence of the potential for future development at the highest level. The appointments will be made with a view to enhancing opportunities for collaborative teaching and research with other colleagues, including those whose regional expertise is not in any of the geographical areas listed. The appointees will be expected to teach across the full range of History undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They will contribute to teaching on pre-honours courses, including two or more of the following: Early Modern History: a Connected World; The Making of the Modern World; Global Connections since 1450; The Global Economy since 1750; The Historian’s Toolkit; and Introduction to Historiography. They will offer Honours courses and postgraduate courses in the history of the period between about 1450 and 1830, as well as supervising postgraduate research students, including doctoral students.

 

These positions are both Full time (35 hours per week) and open ended with a start date of 3 September 2018.

 

The role is grade UE08 and attracts an annual salary of £39,992 to £47,722.

The appointees will be expected to conduct research and publish within their own fields. They should also demonstrate the potential for developing cross- and inter-disciplinary collaborative projects within the School of History, Classics, and Archaeology; with other parts of the University; and with HEIs in the UK and internationally. They will be expected to submit high-quality applications to secure external research funding. In particular, we are seeking to encourage joint funding applications with colleagues in one or more of the following Centres, Groups, and Networks: the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies, the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the Intellectual History Research Group, the Global and Transnational History Research Group, the Gender History Network, the Eighteenth-Century and Enlightenment Studies Network, and the History of Medicine, Science, and Technology Network. The successful candidates will also contribute to the administration of the Subject Area and the School, and provide pastoral care and guidance to students. All newly appointed academic staff are expected to work towards a qualification in teaching in higher education.

2. Job Purpose

To teach on pre-honours courses, including two or more of the following: The Historian’s Toolkit; Introduction to Historiography; Early Modern History: a Connected World; The Making of the Modern World; Global Connections since 1450; and the Global Economy since 1750; offer Honours and PG option courses in the history of the period between about 1450 and 1830; contribute to core courses on historical skills and methods at Honours and PG level; supervise doctoral students; conduct internationally excellent research on any aspect of history in the period between c. 1450 and c. 1830, and one or more of the following geographical regions: Continental Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia; develop cross- and interdisciplinary collaborative projects within HCA, with other parts of the University, and with other HEIs in the UK and abroad; submit high-quality applications to secure external research funding; contribute to the administration of the Subject Area and the School; provide pastoral care and guidance to students; work towards a qualification in teaching at higher education institutions.

 

3. Main Responsibilities

 

Develop a portfolio of internationally excellent research outputs (approx. 35 per cent of time).

 

Undertake honours teaching and supervision to meet the teaching objectives of HCA (approx. 15 per cent of time)

 

Conduct teaching-related administration to contribute to smooth running of teaching programme in HCA (approx. 15 per cent of time)

 

Deliver Postgraduate teaching to contribute to the goals of the Graduate School in HCA (approx. 10 per cent of

time)

Deliver pre-honours lectures and tutorials to meet the teaching objectives of HCA (approx. 10 per cent of time)

 

Provide pastoral advice and guidance to students (approx. 10 per cent of time).

 

Supervise undergraduate dissertations to meet the teaching objectives of HCA (approx. 5 per cent of time)

 

4. Planning and Organising

Plan and carry out research on any aspect of history in the period between c. 1450 and c. 1830, and in one or more of the following geographical regions: Continental Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia; publish research outputs
Develop collaborative research projects within HCA, with other parts of the University, and with other HEIs in the UK and abroad
Deliver honours teaching as directed by Head of History
Plan supervision meetings of final-year dissertation students as directed by Head of History
Plan and deliver pre-honours teaching as directed by course organisers and Head of History
Deliver postgraduate teaching as directed by Postgraduate Director
Supervise doctoral research students
Plan and carry out administrative tasks as required
Provide guidance to students through the Personal Tutor system

 

5. Problem Solving

Work with senior colleagues and the Student Support Office to assist students who encounter difficulties in their studies
Work with course organisers to assist students new to studying History
Work with support staff to deal with administrative issues

 

6. Decision Making

Decide on programmes of work for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including doctoral students.
Make decisions about the assessment of the work of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Participate in classification decisions.

Work within the History subject area and the HCA Graduate School to deliver teaching that will contribute to internal and external assessments of the quality of teaching in HCA, such as the National Student Survey.

This role is grade UE08 and therefore the post holder is automatically included in membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subject to the USS membership criteria, unless they indicate that they choose not to join the Scheme.

Salary

 

The role is grade UE08 and attracts an annual salary of ££39,992 to £47,722 for 35 hours, each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. Salaries for part-time staff are calculated on the full-time scales, pro-rata to the Standard Working Week.

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology


From its foundation in 1583, the University of Edinburgh has maintained a distinguished tradition of higher learning and academic excellence.
