The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Oulu announces an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in English Philology for the period 1 March 2018 – 31 August 2019 (with a 4-month trial period). The position is located in the research project iTask: Linguistic and embodied features of interactional multitasking. Subject field and description


The postdoctoral researcher will work in the iTask-project ( The project uses video-based and conversation analytic methods to study interactional multitasking. It analyses how people talk and interact in real-time to make multitasking possible and how talk and interaction adapt to the demands to progress more than one activity at a time. The project studies multitasking in various settings, such as families, research laboratories, coordination centres, cafés and cars. The languages used in these settings are English, Finnish, French and Estonian. The project focuses on talk and multimodal features of interaction to identify and analyse interactional practices and social actions that people rely on to manage situations where they are multitasking.




The hired postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for conducting research in the project’s area. The researcher can also take part in teaching and supervision (max. 5% of working time).




A Ph.D. for example in sociology, linguistics or education in which the applicant has used conversation analytic or interaction analytic methods is required. Familiarity with the use of video-based methods and experience in working in international research environments are considered merits. Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. The applicant should have attained a Ph.D. no more than ten years before the end of the application period.


Evaluation Criteria


Special emphasis will be given to the following criteria: a) research expertise within the subject field, demonstrated by the doctoral dissertation and publication record; b) relevance of the applicant’s planned research for the iTask-project as outlined in the applicant’s brief research plan.

The salary of the appointed postdoctoral researcher will be set at levels 5 or 6 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to this basic salary, supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3% of the salary level (5-6) that is set for the post. The base salary is paid for monthly and in practice is roughly 3 300-4 100 euros per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
