Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to be based in the Department of Music and Media’s Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR, http://iosr.uk) and to work full-time on the EPSRC-programme-grant-funded project S3A: Future Spatial Audio for an Immersive Listener Experience at Home (http://www.s3a-spatialaudio.org). The post is available from February 2018 until June 2019, and the successful candidate will contribute to maximising the impact of the S3A project.

 

The post-holder will collaborate with other researchers in the S3A project at the Universities of Surrey, Salford, and Southampton, and will work on one or more of the following areas: signal processing for extraction of audio objects from mixtures; rendering objects to non-standard loudspeaker arrays; development of production tools for novel spatial audio systems; or creation of object-based audio datasets.

 

The successful applicant will have a range of skills, including some of the following: an excellent audio signal processing background; experience of blind source separation algorithms; experience of audio production; expertise/interest in psychoacoustics. Also desirable is enthusiasm for working with project partners in other departments and at other universities and organisations.

 

The IoSR is home to the Tonmeister undergraduate degree programme and is a leading centre for research in psychoacoustic engineering. It has research projects funded by EPSRC, the European Commission and industrial collaborators, involving human listening tests, acoustic measurement, statistical modelling and digital signal processing. Current work is, for example, developing systems for spatial enhancement of object-based audio reproduction, for timbral perception modelling, and for next-generation loudness metering.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
