Assistant Professor in Tourism Aalborg University, Department of Culture and Global Studies, The Faculty of Humanities Denmark


At the Department of Culture and Global Studies, The Faculty of Humanities, a position as assistant professor within turisme is available from 01.08.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 4 years.



The Department of Culture and Global Studies, Faculty of Humanities, seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Tourism whose work will complement and extend the existing expertise within the Tourism Research Unit and Tourism Master degree programme at the Aalborg Campus. The successful candidate will conduct research and teaching in one or more of the following areas: tourism and consumption practices; innovation in tourism and tourist experiences; tourism marketing and destination branding.


During their employment as an assistant professor, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Deliver high quality teaching, supervision, and associated examination, as required across the range of modules offered on the Tourism MA programme, including the modules ‘Consumer Studies in Tourism’ and ‘Innovation in Tourism’.

  2. Undertake research and publish research outputs of an internationally recognized quality

  3. Engage in external research networks and collaborations

  4. Engage with external organisations to enhance the cultural, social, environmental and/or economic impacts of their research and/or teaching

  5. Participate positively and fully in the day-to-day activities of the Department of Culture and Global Studies and the Tourism Research Unit.


Candidates for this position must have submitted, and preferably completed, a doctorate in a relevant field.


In relation to research, applicants should document:

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to produce high quality research outputs and publish in international journals

  • a personal research plan which is consistent with the Department of Culture and Global Studies’ research strategy and demonstrates the potential to develop new research projects

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to develop external and/or international networks and collaborations

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to engage in activities with actors outside academia to enhance the impact of research.


In relation to teaching, applicants should document:

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to deliver high quality teaching on the Tourism Master programme, using a range of pedagogical approaches including problem based learning, project supervision, group work, interactive seminars and lectures

  • their ability to teach, and assess written and oral performances, in English.


In relation to general competences, applicants should also:

  • document experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to work collaboratively with colleagues, participate fully in the day-to-day activities of the Department and research group, and foster a positive and collegial working environment

  • demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.

Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.


The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 


Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.
