Faculty Open Position

1. Affiliation: Academy of Hiroshima University(Graduate School of Integrated Arts and
Sciences, Department of Studies of Civilization and Society )
In accordance with the provisions of Article 8, “Special Provisions of Measures
Pertaining to Women Workers,” of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law for Men
and Women, an open recruitment limited to female researchers is conducted as one
measure to actively increase the current low ratio of female faculty members.

2. Position and Number of Positions: Associate professor or Associate professor(tenure
track), one (1)

3. Date of Commencement of Employment: The new hire is to begin working at our
university on October 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

4. Terms of employment
(1) Tenure-track position

 Period of employment: Five (5) years

No reappointment or extension of employment will be offered. However, tenure-track
faculty members will undergo a tenure review within six (6) months prior to completion of
the term of appointment, and those who have successfully passed the review process will
be granted tenure.

* Article 15-2 of “Act on Improving the Capacity, and the Efficient Promotion of Research
and Development through Promotion of Research and Development System Reform” is
applied to them, so the overall period required for the employer to be deemed to have
accepted “the application for signing a labor contract without term” set in Article 18,
paragraph (1) of the Labor Contract Act, is to be ’for over ten (10) years’.

Family, Regional Society, Industry Surrounding Civil Life, etc.
Undergraduate level (discipline specific courses):
Social Dynamics, Seminar in Social Dynamics,
Trend in Contemporary Society Viewed from the Survey Data,
Practical Seminar on Social Research Method1,
Practical Seminar on Social Research Method2, etc.
Graduate level (master’s programs):
Social Structure, Seminar in Integrated Arts and Sciences,etc.
Graduate level (doctoral programs):
Special Study on Social Environmental Studies, etc.

* In addition to the courses listed above, she may be asked to teach general education
courses and/or discipline-specific courses in other undergraduate and graduate

7. Application Requirements:

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements;

(1) Female researcher.
(2) Hold a PhD or equivalent academic achievements in the above area of specialization
and has sufficient research and educational achievements, including research
achievements based on social survey of own planning.
(3) Be able to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Japanese.
(4) Have sufficient Japanese ability to participate in administrative affairs.
(5) Be able to teach classes and supervise students in English.

8. Application Documents

(1) Curriculum Vitae (including a recent photograph, names and contact details of two
persons from whom references may be sought ).

(2) A list of academic achievements (please check 5 major PUBLISHED works) and
specify for all works if they are reviewed or not; hard copies (original or offprint
publications) of the five checked works (with a summary for each of these major
works either in Japanese or English) are required and MUST be included with the
application. Additional hard copies with summaries of publications may be required.

*Publications recorded at Thomson Reuters Science Citation index (SCI), Social Sciences
Citation Index (SSCI), Arts Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), or Emerging Sources
Citation Index (ESCI) should be indicated by adding [SCI, SSCI, A&HCI, or ESCI] at top.

(3) One-page statement of teaching experience and an outline of future teaching plans.

(4) One-page statement of current research and an outline of future research plans.

(5) List of acquired external funding over the last five years.

(6) At least one letter of recommendation.

(7) Any other materials you think helpful.

All of these documents may either be in English or Japanese. In addition, applicants
are requested to submit ALL documents in Word 2007/2010/2013 or PDF files on a
USB memory stick, in addition to the hardcopies outlined above.

11. Selection Procedures

(1) Selection will be based on application documents.

(2) We may hold an interview as needed. As a general rule, we will conduct simulated
lessons in English. In such a case, please note that no travel expenses will be
provided. If we hold interviews with applicants who have passed the selection
based on their application documents, we will inform them of the form of interview
that we plan to have.

(3) Hiroshima University promotes gender equality in accordance with the legislative

12. Employment status

(1) If you are agreeable to the application of the Discretionary Labor System for
Professional Work, you are deemed to work for 7 hours and 45 minutes a day and
38 hours and 45 minutes a week. If not, working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 (from
Monday to Friday) and break time is from 12:00 to 13:00.

(2) Workdays are from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) in principle.

(3) Holidays are Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in principle.

13. Salary, etc.

(1)The monthly salary system or annual salary will be applied to successful candidates.

they make to assume their post from their home or former place of work to the new

14. Evaluation

We conduct individual performance evaluations for all Hiroshima University faculty
members after their employment, numerically rate their performance, and consider
their evaluation results in their treatment.

(1) Probationary employment period: six (6) months (Hiroshima University Work
Regulations for Employees.)
