Faculty Open Position

(Open recruitment limited to female)

1. Affiliation: Academy of Hiroshima University(Graduate School of Integrated Arts and
Sciences, Department of Studies of Civilization and Society)

In accordance with the provisions of Article 8, “Special Provisions of Measures Pertaining
to Women Workers,” of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law for Men and Women, an
open recruitment limited to female researchers is conducted as one measure to actively
increase the current low ratio of female faculty members.

With the aim of achieving medium to long-term growth to join the top 100 world university
rankings list, Hiroshima University plans to recruit and develop excellent researchers.
Furthermore, in order to make the age structure of the faculty more balanced, the University
plans to implement a campus-wide initiative to provide a diverse group of faculty members -
especially young and female faculty members - with more opportunities to play a leading role on
campus, thereby invigorating research and education activities at the University.

With this in mind, the University seeks applications from young researchers this time

2. Position and Number of Positions: Associate Professor or Lecturer (tenure position),
one (1)

3. Date of Commencement of Employment: The new hire is to begin working at our
university on October 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

4. Field of Specialization: Socio-cultural Studies on Spanish-speaking regions focusing on
Latin America

5. Courses to Teach:
Undergraduate level (general education courses): Spanish, etc.
Undergraduate level (discipline specific courses): Socio-cultural Studies on Spanishspeaking
regions, Seminar in Socio-cultural Studies on
Spanish-speaking regions, Special Study, etc.
Graduate level (master’s programs): Socio-cultural Studies, Seminar in Integrated
Arts and Sciences, Special Study, etc.
Graduate level (doctoral programs): Seminar in Cultural and Historical Studies, etc.

* In addition to the courses listed above he or she may be asked to teach general
education courses and/or discipline-specific courses in other undergraduate and
graduate schools.

6. Application Requirements:

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements.

(1) Female researcher.
(2) Hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent degree.
Have sufficient research achievements and teaching experience in the above field of
(3) Have sufficient Japanese ability to participate in administrative affairs.
(4) Be able to teach classes and supervise students in Japanese and Spanish.

7. Application Documents

(1) Curriculum Vitae (including a recent photograph, e-mail address, and academic
societies) Applicants must include the names and contact details of two persons
from whom references may be sought.

(2) A list of academic achievements should include books, academic papers, conference
proceedings and other works such as a book review, translation, and conference
presentation. Works must be numbered and five major works must be marked.
Underline the numbers of academic papers published in refereed journals.

*Please list the information of the doctoral thesis at the end of the research
achievement list. (Title, total number of pages, year)

(3) Summary of each of the five major works in both approximately 400 Japanese
letters and 200 English words.

(4) A one-page statement of your academic achievements and future research interests
in either 500 English words or 1,000 Japanese letters.

(5) A one-page statement of your teaching experience and hopes in either 500 English
words or 1,000 Japanese letters.

(6) List of acquired external funding over the last five years.

(7) A letter of recommendation.

(8) Any other materials you think helpful.

(9) Hard copies (original or offprint publications) of the five major works.

In addition, applicants are requested to submit (1) to (6) documents in Word
2007/2010/2013 or PDF files on a CD-ROM, or a USB memory stick, in addition to
the hardcopies outlined above.

10. Selection Procedures

(1) Selection will be based on application documents.

(2) We may hold an interview as needed. The interview may include a mock lesson. As a
general rule, we will conduct simulated lessons in Spanish and Japanese. In such a
case, please note that no travel expenses will be provided. If we hold interviews with
applicants who have passed the selection based on their application documents, we
will inform them of the form of interview that we plan to have.

(3) Hiroshima University promotes gender equality in accordance with the legislative

11. Employment status

(1) If you are agreeable to the application of the Discretionary Labor System for
Professional Work, you are deemed to work for 7 hours and 45 minutes a day and 38
hours and 45 minutes a week. If not, working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 (from
Monday to Friday) and break time is from 12:00 to 13:00.

(2) Workdays are from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) in principle.

(3) Holidays are Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in principle.

12. Salary, etc.

(1) The annual salary will be applied to successful candidates.

(Regulations Concerning Salaries of Hiroshima University Faculty Members will be
applied. )

(2) Successful candidates may be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred for the trip
they make to assume their post from their home or former place of work to the new
place of work, in accordance with the relevant regulations of Hiroshima University.

13. Evaluation

We conduct individual performance evaluations for all Hiroshima University faculty
members after their employment, numerically rate their performance, and consider
their evaluation results in their treatment.

(1) Probationary employment period: six (6) months

(Hiroshima University Work Regulations for Employees.)
