University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs in the classroom and online through technologies for course delivery.


In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.


Each year, UCCE serves over 20,000 adult learners and offers more than one thousand courses taught by hundreds of instructors—all experts in their fields. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the university.


The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon effectively serving students and by providing high-quality instruction and programs.


Position Description


University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently recruiting for an instructor (contract (term) position) to teach the following ICT 700 – Business Intelligence Introduction – Classroom delivery course and ICT 705 – Gathering Requirements for BI Projects – Classroom delivery course.


These instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).

Course Description (700):

This course introduces students to the concepts, practices and tools used to successfully deploy business intelligence projects. Emphasis will be given to people and processes with an introduction to the technologies involved.


Business Intelligence (BI) is an umbrella term that includes the applications, infrastructure, tools, and best practices that enable access to and analysis of information to improve and optimize decisions and performance. It is both a business and a technology endeavour.


Its success depends largely on bringing business and technology together in the right ways around people, process, technology and data. For both business and IT managers, BI skills are some of the most in-demand skills in business today.


Course Level Learning Outcomes (700):

  • Describe the four main components of a business intelligence system

  • Discuss the roles, processes, techniques, and technology related to business intelligence applications

  • Explain the role of data management in successful business intelligence systems

  • Apply dimensional modelling techniques

  • Recognize the roles, processes, techniques, and technology related to Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) systems


Course Description (705):

This course will introduce students to the tools, techniques and best practices that are used to define and manage business requirements for Business Intelligence projects.


Defining business requirements for IT projects can be a challenging process under ideal conditions. The scope of requirements for Business Intelligence (BI) projects can range from enterprise wide strategic programs, to addressing specific reporting needs for a small subset of users in a single department.


Whether the business analysis is on a wider or more narrowly scoped BI project, there are additional considerations to deal with the additional complexity found in data driven projects, broad range of stakeholders and constantly changing reporting requirements.


This course is designed for those who want to be able to efficiently and effectively define BI requirements that can be used for all projects in organizations of any size. This course assumes you are already familiar with basic BI concepts.


Course Level Learning Outcomes (705):

  • Communicate an understanding of the basic concepts of gathering requirements

  • Identify each requirement category and its use

  • Create a data model at two levels, conceptual and logical


Scope of Responsibilities (high level)

  • Create effective lessons plans, develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, evaluations, examinations.

  • (If classroom): Utilize Desire2Learn for all course materials, assessment and, student communication.

  • (If online) Utilize Desire2Learn (D2L) and Adobe Connect to facilitate synchronous and asynchronous course delivery including all course materials, experiences and student communication.


  • Master’s degree or equivalent and work experience in the field are desirable.

  • Industry experience an asset.

  • Adult learning certificate or equivalent is an asset.

  • Previous teaching experience is essential; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred.

  • Previous experience utilizing Learning Management Systems such as Desire2Learn, Adobe Connect, Blackboard or Moodle, is preferred.
