The School of History at Queen Mary University of London is seeking to make a senior appointment at the level of Reader or Professor in the field of the History of Political Thought. As a member of the Russell Group of British Universities, it is ranked among the leading universities in the United Kingdom for the quality of its research and teaching. The Humanities and Social Science Graduate School has over 600 students pursuing taught Masters and doctoral research degrees.

The School has in particular developed an exceptional reputation in the field of political thought across all periods (Bourke, Manent, Stedman Jones, Siegelberg, Skinner, Varouxakis). It has a flourishing Centre of the Study of the History of Political Thought – a cross-faculty collaborative venture based in the School of History – and plays a key role in the running of a University of London MA in the History of Political Thought and Intellectual History which attracts large numbers of high quality students from all over the world.

The holder of the advertised post will succeed Professor Richard Bourke following his appointment to the Chair of the History of Political Thought in the University of Cambridge. The School is looking not only for a researcher of international standing, working in any area of the field, but also someone who will offer leadership to the political thought cluster, and so sustain and develop its coherence and reputation, and that of the Centre and the MA.

The post is full time and permanent starting from 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary for a Reader appointment will be in the range: £53,777 to 67,239 per annum. The starting salary for a Professorial appointment is negotiable and no less than £67,756 per annum.
