Department Description

The Department of Theatre & Performance in the Wits School of Arts is one of the leading academic and professional performance and theatre-making training programmes in South Africa. It offers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of specialisations. The Department is currently undergoing considerable curriculum change and a focus shift leading to an increased demand for specialist expertise in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.



The Department seeks to make an appointment at the level of Associate Lecturer/Lecturer a theatre-maker who has a demonstrated interest and expertise in theatre design/ scenography/ stagecraft or a cognate professional practice. We are seeking an individual who is actively engaged with the South African theatre and who is competent in use of design software, presentation methods including building models in the various areas of design. The ideal candidate would have strong knowledge of design, construction methods and proven experience in designing for different stage auditorium configurations. The ability to be initiative and develop both conventional and innovative learning and teaching material addressing issues of visual literacy and their application in performance is a core requirement for appointment. The candidate should also be in the position to contribute to at least one of a range of professional courses such as theatre production, performance, directing, movement and writing in addition to contributing to the Department’s academic courses. In case of the latter, the candidate should demonstrate a commitment to the interplay of theory and practice in theatre and an understanding of major trends in 20th Century theatre, especially in the global south.


If appointed at the level of associate lecturer, there will be an expectation to register for an MA during the life of the contract, but no undergraduate or postgraduate supervision will be expected. The main focus will be on facilitating teaching and learning as an integrated form of conceptual and creative practice. The successful candidate may be absorbed into permanent staff upon meeting all targets set at the beginning of the contract.


At the level of lecturer, teaching and supervision is expected at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including teaching in the core academic courses offered by the Department. At all levels of appointment the successful applicant will be expected to participate in the Department’s administrative activities, to contribute to the work of the School, and to maintain an active involvement in the professional world of performance practice both within and outside the University.




We are seeking candidates with at least a strong BA Honours degree in Theatre and Performance or a cognate discipline where theatre design is one of the majors. A solid demonstrable industry experience is vital.



The successful candidate will have at least 3 years of professional and/or teaching theatre experience. An MA in Theatre Design or cognate area with a distinguished professional/industry profile is essential at this level.
