PhD Research Fellow in education with emphasis in the area of general didactics


The University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education, invites applications for a three-year 100% PhD research position, alternatively applicants may apply for a four-year position in which 75% of the time is assigned to research and 25% of the time is assigned to teaching activities. The position is within the Department of Education. Workplace will be at the Kristiansand campus, Norway, and the starting date is to be negotiated with the Faculty.

 

The Department of Education currently has approximately 50 academic employees and 10 PhD students. The department’s areas include pedagogy and practical pedagogical education, compulsory school teacher education and kindergarten teacher education, pedagogy One-year programme and bachelor’s programme, special education bachelor’s programme and continuing education studies, a bilingual education bachelor’s programme, master’s programmes in pedagogy and special education, and the PhD programme in education. The Department offers continuing education to municipalities, counties, private businesses and the public sector.

 

The position has an emphasis on general didactics. It is expected that the applicant will work within this field. However, he/she is free to choose a specific research theme within that area. Examples of relevant themes for research projects are:

 

  • Didactical research in connection with holistic learning (Norw. ‘danning’)
  • Teaching in the light of cultural diversity
  • Classroom research
  • International and national trends in education
  • Production of social differences in pedagogical institutions (e.g., through identities such as gender, minorities etc.) 

 

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in education or equivalent. The University of Agder is a member of the national research school in Educational Science. It is a requirement of the fellowship that the applicant is accepted to University of Agder PhD programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

 

Working language is Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages. Good English written and verbal skills are also required. The doctoral thesis may be written in English, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

 

 

The position requires that the applicant can work goal-oriented, organised, concentrated and independently. In assessing applicants, emphasis will be placed on the quality/relevance of the project description, the results obtained, the relevance of the academic background, any previously published work and documented development work. These points will be discussed and added to the expert assessment. Relevant practice, personal capacity and cooperation skills will also be emphasised.

 

Applicants should develop a project description to be included with the application. The project description should be no longer than five pages, excluding the reference list, and present and discuss the background for the theme, theoretical perspectives, research questions and methods within the given framework. A plan for progression for the training portion (coursework) and completion of the doctoral degree within the prescribed period should also be presented in the project description (see: https://www.uia.no/studier/forskerutdanning/spesialisering-i-pedagogikk). 

 

Qualified candidates will be called in for an interview. A review of the candidate’s references will be completed in agreement with the applicant.

Appointments are made by the Appointments Committee for Teaching and Research Positions at the University of Agder. The appointed person has rights and duties according to the guidelines that apply to the position at the time.

 

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017 Research Fellow, salary 449 400,-. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
