Faculty Head of Education and Professor (Arts and Humanities) Manchester Metropolitan University, Faculty of Arts and Humanities United Kingdom

Faculty Head of Education and Professor (Arts and Humanities)

Who we are

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and the most popular city for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries – 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

Where you’ll work

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a large multidisciplinary community embracing Humanities, Social Sciences, the Manchester School of Art and the Manchester Fashion Institute. With around 10,000 students, the Faculty has a portfolio of quality provision in both Education and Research, with some areas of world-leading performance such as the Manchester School of Architecture. It is also home to the Manchester Writing School, with Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy as Creative Director, comprising the largest community of Creative Writing postgraduate students in the UK – and more than 85 published authors among its alumni. The Education agenda is particularly important, with a drive towards a more engaging and international curriculum, giving our staff scope to progress towards Readerships and Chairs in Education.

About the role

Strengthening a network of Faculty Heads of Education across the University, you will manage and monitor a team of departmental education leads to ensure that our students enjoy an exciting, stimulating and outward-facing education. Setting our long-term strategic vision for Education, you will create effective operational plans to drive improvement, align working practices with those of Faculty Heads in other Thematic Areas, and build high-quality external partnerships that will enhance our funding, create additional student placements and raise our global profile. Above all, you will constantly identify and embed best practice to improve colleagues’ capabilities, giving them the impetus to accelerate their careers whilst enhancing our students’ experience.

About You

Ideally, but not essentially, operating at Professorial level, you will have an impressive academic record and considerable standing in teaching and research. Naturally, you will bring expert understanding of the challenges facing undergraduate and postgraduate education, highly developed influencing and networking skills, and proven ability to attain and manage external funding. Experience at Programme Leader, Subject Leader or Head of Department level would be very useful, but more importantly you will be commercially astute, passionate about professional development and capable of taking a long-term strategic overview whilst paying meticulous attention to detail.

Please apply by submitting a CV and covering letter outlining your suitability for the role.
