Gaming is a defining cultural form of the 21st century. The Department of Computational Arts has an expansive and forward looking perspective on game education both through exploration of a range of delivery platforms from mobile to VR and through examining new and cutting edge trends in gaming, such as in the areas of alt gaming, queer games, Not Games, and urban gaming where the potential and boundaries of games and game play are being challenged and tested.

This position will attract a strong junior creative researcher who is an experienced game designer and developer with knowledge of design theory, professional game engines, and coding for game development. A candidate would be one who develops and explores gaming as it is played out in a wide range of contemporary practices with an ongoing program of research and specialization in one or more of the following areas: art games, serious games, experimental game mechanics, alternate reality games, game-related art, installation, worldmaking, or visualization. The profile of the ideal candidate will be a practicing artist and creative coder with a proven background in theory and scholarship who has worked with professional game engines, has experience with the dissemination of work in various platforms and cultural contexts (mobile media, web-based, gallery, etc.), and incorporates interdisciplinary approaches to art and science with a capacity to teach and provide leadership in curriculum development in studio-based games courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Primary teaching will take place in the Game Arts Stream of the Digital Media program, a joint program between the Department of Computational Arts in AMPD, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Lassonde School of Engineering. As well as potential teaching in the Intermedia Program, a joint program between the Department of Computational Arts and Visual Art and Art History.

The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching.
