The Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies at the Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant or associate professorship in the field of literacy research.



The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 January or as soon as possible thereafter.


The position is based at DPU either in Emdrup/Copenhagen or in Aarhus . It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between the two cities.

 

The position


We are seeking innovative and dedicated applicants who can contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The position focuses on aspects on literacy and will also include participation in international comparative assessment studies and compulsory school research. We expect the successful applicant to cooperate with the research environment in curriculum studies and literacy at DPU, both in the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies and especially in the National Centre for School Research. If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to lead PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study). If an assistant professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to PIRLS. The successful applicant will be expected to cooperate with colleagues in relation to the other IEA studies (PIRLS is one of these).   

 

Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy.

 

Research 


We are looking for a candidate with substantial research experience in literacy who can demonstrate skills in empirical research.



In addition, it will be considered an advantage if an applicant: 
• Has specific research and/or teaching experience in the field of literacy, understood as the development of reading and/or writing competences
• Has specific research and/or teaching experience connected to reading and writing processes in primary or secondary school 
• Can demonstrate skills in collaborative and cross-disciplinary research
• Can demonstrate skills in handling different scientific methods, qualitative as well as quantitative.

 

Teaching


Assistant professors are expected to teach and supervise students at BA and MA level, whereas associate professors are expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD). Both assistant and associate professors are expected to contribute to the development and use of innovative teaching methods. The position involves teaching duties as well as responsibility for the development of courses that relate to the above-mentioned field of study. If an assistant professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be required to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

 

Talent development


If an assistant professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to develop their supervision capabilities at MA level within the field of literacy. If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to talent development within the field of literacy, as well as supervising PhD students and teaching and developing PhD courses.



Knowledge exchange


The successful applicant is expected to engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.



Qualifications


Applicants for an assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in literacy in relation to education or related fields, and must be able to document:

• Substantial research experience in literacy with special relevance for school research 
• Skills in empirical research
• An internationally oriented research profile 
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research 
• Experience of or potential for obtaining external research funding
• Teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching including innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects and interest in researcher talent development.



Applicants for an associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in literacy in relation to education or related fields, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document.

 

• Substantial research experience in literacy with special relevance for school research

• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, as well as mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation 
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.



The applicant must be able to teach and publish in English and Danish or another Scandinavian language.
