The University of Helsinki Centre for University Teaching and Learning (HYPE) is a research and development unit located at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and serving the entire University of Helsinki. The Centre’s duties include multidisciplinary research in university teaching and learning at the University of Helsinki as well as related training, pedagogical specialist services, educational development and quality assurance.


The Centre for University Teaching and Learning emphasises the close connection between research and teaching and its significance for the high quality of teaching at the University of Helsinki. The Centre conducts international state-of-the-art research on university teaching and learning. The research is applied to develop teaching and learning methods that are suitable for the academic context and its various fields of science and which promote students’ independent and critical thinking and support their development into experts. The research also enhances the teaching expertise of university teachers.

The appointee's duties focus on university teaching and learning. The Centre for University Teaching and Learning is responsible for research and education in university teaching and learning as well as the research-based development of teaching and learning at the University of Helsinki. The appointee must be willing and able to commit to the development of the field of the positions, the teaching of the University of Helsinki, the degree programmes of all faculties and the work community. The appointee must also actively follow scientific developments, be involved in public engagement and collaborate with international partners. Their duties will also include the acquisition of Finnish and international research funding.



An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.


To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within three years of taking up the position. The employer will support the appointee’s language learning.


When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to:

• Scientific publications
• Success in obtaining external research funding
• Leading of scientific research
• International research experience
• Activity in the academic community
• Teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits
• Leadership skills
• Vision of how the applicant intends to develop the field and focus his or her research
• Assessor statements and success in interview and demonstration lecture.



Annual gross salary for this position varies between 60,000 and 75,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
