DESCRIPTION

The History Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in the history of modern China, at the tenured Associate or early stage Full Professor level. Research may be focused on any period from the late 19th century to the present. Thematic interests may include, but are not limited to, the history of labor, gender, sexuality, science, the environment, political economy, regional and transnational connections.

Applicants should have an established track record of research and teaching focused on modern Chinese history in the context of East Asia and the broader world. An ability to teach graduate seminars on topics in modern Chinese history, research methods, and the history of the People’s Republic is desirable. Applicants will be expected to conduct research, teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to department, university, and professional service.

The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
