The Academy of Design and Crafts aims to be one of the most attractive and exciting art academies in Europe. We conduct research and education in design, arts and crafts and educational science. The department is committed to societal issues both large and small and contributes to a sustainable society and a better future.

The Academy of Design and Crafts is part of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg and currently comprises, in addition to the Academy of Design and Crafts, the Academy of Music and Drama and the Valand Academy. Over the next five years, the entire Faculty of Fine Applied and Performing Arts will undergo a major change. The plans are to house the faculty in a joint campus (Art 2025) to better utilize in-house skills and create greater opportunities for collaboration for students, lecturers, researchers as well as other staff. The Academy of Design and Crafts and the Valand Academy have been part of a development process for a couple of years and will be integrated on January 1, 2020.

The Crafts programmes at the Academy of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg are an all-encompassing environment that involve constant exchange and interchange between undergraduate education, research and society. Within the arts and crafts discipline, education is conducted at the foundational and advanced level, as well as at postgraduate level. The Crafts programmes consist of undergraduate level programmes in Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art, and at the postgraduate level you can specialise in Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art. The programmes provide postgraduate education in the field of crafts and the Academy of Design and Crafts is the only institution in Sweden with degree-awarding powers for postgraduate degrees in the subject.

Subject description

The subject of crafts spans expert craftsmanship, conceptual forms and research-based activities. What unites it is a reflective approach to materials, method, function and tradition. At the Academy of Design and Crafts, we explore the potential of the subject to create an understanding of our times through artistic depiction. It is a non-linear process that starts with a material or an idea. The process progresses as a dialogue between practitioner, method, material and the surrounding world.

Jewellery Art is centred around jewellery in a historical and contemporary context. Jewellery Art explores jewellery, the wearing of jewellery, and mankind's relationship to the objects and artefacts we use to adorn ourselves and express ourselves artistically through a variety of materials, concepts and methods. The programmes of the Academy of Design and Crafts focus on the students' artistic processes. Students develop a familiarity with the subject of jewellery art while at the same time developing their own artistic expression and conscious approach to different opportunities within the field.

Role and responsibilities

The position involves planning and conducting education within the master's programme in Crafts, which includes the disciplines of Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art, while working in close cooperation with the programme co-ordinator and other professors within the discipline of arts and crafts. The position also includes developing the Jewellery Art programme at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, together with other staff members of the Jewellery Art faculty.

Tasks include planning, lecturing, supervising, student contact and quality work pertaining to the programme. An important part of the job is to be responsible for the development of the subject of jewellery art and to conduct research on the subject. The work also includes Crafts faculty and department meetings at the Academy of Design and Crafts.
