This is a grade W1-professorship to which recruitment payments can be offered.

Fulltime position, Start-date: At the earliest possible date.

This professorship is particularly suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.


The successful candidate should represent the field of modern and contemporary art in research and teaching and be prepared to participate in the research centers and research associations of the faculty. The ability and willingness to participate in all courses of study in the subject is also expected. The teaching obligation amounts four to six semester week hours.

The university requires an outstanding dissertation and the clear profiling of a second research focus. One of the two focal points must be modern or contemporary art. In addition, research strength with recognizable potential for internationally visible publications in renowned journals as well as didactic suitability and future participation in in the Collaborative Research Centers “Otium. Boundaries, Chronotopes, Practices” or “Heroes – Heroizations – Heroisms. Transformations and Conjunctures from Antiquity to the Modern Day” as well is expected.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.


This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years. Furthermore, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W3 will be initiated after successful interim evaluation.

The tenure procedures are regulated in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships with and without Tenure Track and agreed upon with the Ministry of Science. As a prerequisite for granting tenure and the subsequent conversion into a full professorship (W3) (1) the requirements defined in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept have to be met and (2) the subject specific criteria determined by the Faculty of Philosophy have to be met.
